Norfolk Redevelopment Remembers George C. Crawley

The
NRHA Board of Commissioners expressed deep regret today on the
passing
former senior
of NRHA executive
George C. Crawley, who served as interim Executive Director upon David H. Rice’s retirement April 1, 2001 until the appointment of Ernest Freeman in October 2001.
“George was one of the first
people to embrace me with I moved to Hampton Roads in 1993. He’s a beloved gentleman whose passion for Norfolk and community service was unmatched,” said Barbara Hamm Lee, NRHA Board Chair.
Crawley made history as the first
African American to serve as Norfolk assistant city manager from 1987 to 1996, responsible for Public Health, Social Services, Libraries, Police, Fire and Paramedics. Following retirement from the city of Norfolk, Crawley founded a management-consulting firm, The Crawley Group Inc., which specialized
in community policing
and related community mobilization activities.

He was appointed to the Elizabeth City State University Board of Trustees by the University Of North Carolina Board Of Governors and was also inducted into the Hampton Roads African American Sports Hall of Fame in 1997.
