“Was it your demo that lost the deal to the competition?” asks

Pip Thomas

Have you ever lost a deal you know you should have won?

We all have of course, and sometimes we’re lucky enough to discover why.

This happened recently to a major name in AV; when they asked the buyer why they’d lost out, they were told sim- ply – the demo.

The competition’s demo was so much better it tipped the balance.

technology actually will benefi t them. We top and tail our party piece demo and are baffl ed when the client doesn’t ‘get it’.

A good demo is about your customer and not your product. It presents your product in terms of how it benefi ts their organisation and their users.

It takes lots of preparation. Loads. It means you have to prepare a bespoke presentation each time.

A good demo is about

them not you and your product

So, you might ask, what makes one demo better than the other?

You might assume the problem lies with  the knowledge of the presenter

 the quality of demonstrator’s presentation skills

 or perhaps the reliability of the presentation tech used

Of course all are important, but ask yourself: ‘Did we actually demonstrate how the product would be useful to the customer?’

Since 78% of projects are sold on the technology not on the usefulness of the technology, I suspect the answer in many cases is ‘no’.

BrightSign shows more curves

Following last month’s sto- ry about the curved display adorning the revamped shopping center in Read- ing, BrightSign technology is supporting a new cylin- drical pillar display at the Westfield Shopping Centre in White City, London. Steve Hudson, Sales Di- rector of systems integrator Project

plained: “We claim to be able to fulfil any brief, but this project really put our capabilities to the test. We were required to install a DynaScan curved LED dis- play around a column with- in a store at the Westfield Shopping Centre. Because we make all of our fixtures to order, ensuring that we can fulfil any brief, this was not a concern. However, our cli- ent had an extremely short timescale.”

controller to deliver 8k content in real time over the network and the first to support multi- ple, independent video walls from a single, standard PC with no specialised video cards required. By integrating with TDM Digital Signage, users have another option for control over the design, location and display timing of content. TDM Digital Signage not only manages and supports myriad content sources, it also pro- vides live statistics on usage and viewing, and can even incorporate a face detection module which recognises age, gender and mood. "TDM Digital Signage’s inte- gration into Userful is a perfect fit. As an HTML5-based soft- ware, it sits well with Userful’s browser-based management console, and the wide range of content it supports comple- ments Userful’s multi-source capabilities" said Tim Griffin,

flexible and cost effective—for deploying high-quality video walls and digital signage”, says Ricardo de Vries, CEO of TDM Digital Signage. “Userful is exactly what we need, as their video wall controller supports multiple content source simul- taneously, and that flexibility is one of the key aspects of TDM’s strength”.

Userful turns a standard PC

into a high end video wall con- troller that delivers content over the network. By integrat- ing with TDM Digital Signage, customers have an intuitive and low cost video wall and sig- nage solution where they can control their content from any browser.

The solution utilizes

a standard Ethernet connection to drive up to 60 displays from a single PC, eliminating much of the proprietary hardware and IT costs traditionally associated with video walls.

software and professional ser- vices in addition to projection technology to Universal Parks and Resorts, helping create customised projection solu- tions for future attractions. With three-time Academy

Award winner Steven Spielberg as creative consultant, Univer- sal Parks and Resorts’ theme parks are known for immersive experiences that feature some of the world’s most thrilling and technologically advanced film- and television-based attrac- tions. Parent company Com- cast NBCUniversal wholly owns Universal Studios Hollywood, which includes Universal City- Walk Hollywood. It also owns Universal Orlando Resort, fea- turing two theme parks (Uni- versal Studios Florida and Uni- versal’s Islands of Adventure), five resort hotels, and Universal CityWalk Orlando.

A major challenge with curved displays is that they use a non-standard format. BrightSign players, with ful- ly configurable resolution, ensure that the content fits the screen correctly. what- ever the size. “This screen is 820 x 580 format – we were able to set that reso- lution in the player so that the content wraps around the column correctly,” said Hudson. “The easy and straightforward configura- tion of BrightSign players in BrightAuthor is a major ben- efit when we’re working to a tight deadline like this. We simply didn’t have the luxu- ry of using the trial and error approach to find the correct settings.”

The BrightSign media player allows the content to be altered remotely, making it easy for the client to keep up with seasonal branding changes. BrightSign signage offers HD video quality and a solid state platform that can be used to stream pre- sentations and live TV. The required digital sig- nage display was designed by Project Audio Visual, along with DynaScan. Due to the short timescale of the project, all of the com- ponents were flown to the Project Audio Visual ware- house in Shanghai to build the LED column. They then shipped it directly to the site to enable a quick and easy installation, with the display being installed and commissioned within 24 hours of arrival into the UK. Steve Hudson conclud- ed, “The LED curved dis- play column is a relatively unique set up in the UK, and since installing the column in Westfield Shop- ping Centre, we have been festooned with enquiries for similar products. We are proud to be part of the trend setting process within our industry.”
