Loose centre plans shown

PLANS for a £1million long- awaited community centre for Loose have been unveiled by the parish council. The two-storey building provid-

ing a parish office, police base and sports hall, would be an extension to the King George V Pavilion which has become inadequate for community needs. Parish councillors have been looking at ways to improve on the facilities at the outdated pavilion and ideas have been displayed at the annual meetings and summer fete since 2008. Now the project has moved a

step closer with the launch of pub- lic consultation and the submission of a planning application to Maid- stone Borough Council (MBC). The original briefwas to improve

the changing facilities for match of- ficials and teams using the playing field inWalnut Tree Lane. A mod- est indoor sports hall and adminis- trative offices for the police and borough representatives were also proposed. Over time, the design was expanded to contain increase storage and meeting rooms. The final plan, which is awaiting borough approval, includes a 200- seat multi-purpose hall with bad- minton and basketball markings as well as enhanced changing facili- ties, a police, PCSO and commu- nity warden base, administrative office, three meeting rooms and a lounge. An overflow reinforced grass surface would provide park- ing for a further 30 cars. One of the meeting rooms will become the parish council chamber.

The council said that with the projected housing increase in Loose, the extension would pro- vide a venue for an enlarging pop- ulation with a higher proportion of elderly users with more social time and needs. The building would be a community centre and hub for groups such as Brownies and play- groups and could also be used for concerts, plays and pantomimes. The single-storey hall, built more

than 20 years ago, would be con- verted to provide a parish office and other rooms. While the plans were due to go

on show at the pavilion on Tues- day, July 26, funding for the scheme has yet to be identified. The parish council said in its newsletter, Loose Views: “We are a local council, not a charity. It has been agreed that if the people of Loose want a community hall which serves all the parish, then it has to come out of the public purse, not the precept.” Parish clerk Jan Capon said:

“This has been in the offing for sev- eral years. It is still at a very early stage. The council is asking people for their views and is putting the planning application through so it can see what is needed.”

Callie-Ann’s swim cash

A MAIDSTONE swimmer with her sights set on the Olympics has been awarded a £300 grant from the Kent County Playing Fields As- sociation, to help further her dream.

Callie-Ann Warrington (15), a

pupil at St Augustine’s Academy, Maidstone, was presented with the award during the KCPFA annual meeting at Aylesford Bulls RFC. Callie-Ann swam 50m freestyle

at the Kent County Champi- onships at The London Aquatics centre in a time of 27.09 seconds, winning her way through to the British Swimming Championship and Olympic trials for Rio and Tokyo, which took place in Glas- gow in April. The grant was towards the cost

of her accommodation during the trials.

Callie recently broke a long-

standing record at the Medway Championships for the Women’s Open 100m freestyle (short course) in a time of 100.33 seconds, taking first place for the 16 and over cate- gory at the Kent County Champi- onships in 100m freestyle (long course) in a time of 59.50 seconds. Callie-Ann was a true water

baby and started swimming at Maidstone Leisure Centre at just 16 weeks old. She has been a member of Maidstone Swimming Club from the age of seven. It has been her long-time goal to

achieve a national time and she would like nothing more than to be able to represent her country at the Olympics. The KCPFA gives several grants

each year to up and coming sports’ stars of the future from its Hawkes and Edwin Boorman Memorial Funds.
