BY ANGELA JONES One could only marvel


at the level of expertise that evidently went into the planning and execution of the 49th Annual Hampton Jazz Festival. Just as impressive as the acts inside the coliseum, the efforts of the City of Hampton to make every aspect of festival attendees' experience as comfortable and stress-free as possible did not go unnoticed.


Drivers were waved-on


to the least congested routes to enter and exit coliseum area parking lots and getting into the building was also hassle-free. Hampton police officers patrolled inside the coliseum to ensure the safety


of the more than 20,000 people attending this year’s festival.


The lineup featured a


return of festival favorites like Gladys Knight, Charlie Wilson, Boney James, Michael McDonald and Stephanie Mills. The lineup also included local jazz favorites like Forte and Myra Smith.

On July 1, Kenneth Cooper Alexander


was sworn-in as the first new mayor that Norfolk has seen in 22 years and purportedly the first African American mayor ever. According to 2010 census data, 43 percent of Norfolk’s residents are African American; down 1% from the 2000 census figures.
