news Shareleague Thames Valley Presented by in association with Business T H E M A G A Z I N E
De La Rue, the world's largest commercial banknote printer and passport manufacturer, also became the largest riser in our May shares league table for the major Thames Valley-based companies.
The Basingstoke group sold off a loss-making unit, then in-line results encouraged analysts to upgrade full-year estimates after it showed progress with its five-year turnaround plans.
It sold its struggling cash-processing business, the division that makes equipment to count cash and check its authenticity, to the private equity group Privet Capital in a deal worth up to £10.1 million. And it also announced it is on the hunt for acquisitions as it seeks to move beyond its core business of making currency for 140 nations and official documents such as passports.
But as usual the biggest rises were among the area’s smaller quoted companies, with Newbury-based Immedia leading the way with a 59% rise.
The supplier of digital audio content solutions for leading brands recently signed a new five-year contract with Subway International for the supply of seven store-branded music and marketing channels, and will also provide in-store equipment.
Egdon Resources, the Hook- based onshore focused oil and gas exploration and production business, was another big riser. It recently announced interim results for the half-year to January that showed gross oil and gas revenues up 15% to £1.05m despite the significant fall in commodity prices.

‘Tomorrow the world’ for 2015 HWYE finalist
Julianne Ponan, a 2015 HWYE competition finalist, was just 22 years old when she bought into Creative Nature. At that stage, she says, the company was a complete mess with over £56,000 losses but with determination she has turned it into a successful business
Jane Wills, a partner at Haines Watts, with Julianne Ponan
So how did she do it? Her enduring vision is the starting point: to change people’s lifestyle for the better by bringing healthy products to the market, sourced worldwide.
By not overspending on anything and sorting out the cashflow, she was able to develop a range of core products with purpose and personal spin. This included Superfood Snack Bars for nut allergy sufferers who wanted to eat healthily.
Crucially, Ponan built a great team; she says that two people with the ‘yes’ gene are better than five members of staff without. Many entrepreneurs, she says, know that you sometimes have to say ‘yes’ to clients and figure out how to do it later, because opportunity doesn’t always knock twice.
Ponan has learnt that, when recruiting, it helps to do two or three interviews/trials before deciding, to ensure the person is absolutely right.
Time management and focusing on the things that will help get your business to the next level is vital. Ponan finds that creating ‘to do’ lists are a great help and makes them realistic, so she completes them.
Other important areas for her company’s success are food
labelling and making sure they comply, along with checking that all certifications are up to date.
Creative Nature is now thriving – it has introduced a new allergen-free superfood home-baking mix line and has just launched its Superfoods Snack Bars nationwide into 1200 Lloyds Pharmacy stores.
The company is now looking to grow its exports. It’s small wonder that Ponan has recently won ‘Director of the Year’ in the Surrey Toast Awards.
Ponan adds that she wishes she’d known sooner about entrepreneur networks where you can receive mentoring, “as this can really help propel your business to the next level“.
If you’re interested in this, finalists of the Haines Watts’ Young Entrepreneur of the Year competition receive a year-long mentoring and support programme with a partner from Haines Watts as part of their prize, as well as cash and free publicity.
