Bench a tribute to lost soldier

A LASTING tribute has been paid to a Staplehurst soldier whose name was missed off the villagewar memorial for 67 years. Sergeant Reginald Fitzgerald

was just 19 years old when the plane he was in failed to return from a mission to deliver supplies to Italian partisans fighting for the Allies in Italy in October 1944. However, because his family

moved from the area around the same time, his connection with the villagewas severed. This meant his name was omit-

ted from the war memorial. The parish council rectified the

error on the memorial in 2012 and, now, a road has been named in his honour. A new development of six bun- galows for affordable rent, which were completed at the end of last

year, has been named Fitzgerald Close. Relatives of Sgt Fitzgerald joined Staplehurst parish council- lors and representatives of the housing provider, plus building contractors Epps, to unveil a bench in Sgt Fitzgerald’s honour at the new development. The commemorative bench was donated and inaugurated by Sgt Fitzgerald’s surviving brothers. Parish Cllr Peter Spearink said:

“This little ceremony drew a line under the parish's effort to make amends to his family and Sgt Fitzgerald's memory and follows on from a full memorial service in 2012. “We are immensely proud of all

we have done as a community to show that those that gave their lives for our future are never for- gotten.”

Cadets at Armed Forces Day

A MOVING act of remembrance formed the focal point of the first Armed Forces Day Event in Sutton Valence.

Organised by the SuttonValence

Hugh Robertson (pictured right with branch chairman Mike FitzGerald) welcomed guests and was supported by the vice-chair- man of Kent County Council, Cllr Keith Brazier, and Maidstone’s
