Spiritual Scribbling MYSTICAL MENTORS
By Lee Sumpter
Anyone who wants to make effective contact with the world beyond the veil should consider what is called automatic writing. This is especially true since the skills and disciplines required for automatic writing are nec- essary for other types of communication from the world of spirit. Automatic writing is a great doorway to all kinds of information beyond everyday material reality.
It does not require any special gifts or background. Like most things, it primarily requires commitment and discipline. The primary requirement, for practicing this skill is a location where it is guaranteed that you will have no disturbances for an hour or more. This is difficult to set up for most people today. The same thing would be asked for learning meditation or “mind- fulness” as it is now called. There is a great benefit to anyone who guarantees to themselves a one hour escape from disturbance. A comfortable non-threat- ening space, pencils, pens, and writing tablets are also needed. An electronic keyboard is not recommended at first because it is itself full of distractions, subject to breakdowns and interference and is much less personal than writing with our own hand.
Automatic writing begins with sitting quietly for a time to clean the mind of distractions. This may take several sessions. It helps to have a few questions that you are seeking to have answered, but you should not focus too much on these. It will limit what you think you understand. Many people begin with simply scribbling, doodling or making line after line of loops. In other words go through the motions of writing without actu- ally writing anything. This also promotes the necessary blank mind that is ready to receive messages. The need for patience here cannot be emphasized too much. This pretending to write or going through the motions may take weeks. When I begin to do automatic writ- ing, I sometimes still spell out the numbers: one, two, three…etc. This helps me focus my mind. Any kind of gibberish will do that frees the mind from the needs and distractions of the present. Some people may find it necessary to resort to extreme measures to achieve this freedom.
It is impossible to say just what kind of results any one person may achieve. Maybe there will be only images that cannot be described instead of words. These could be described later. Maybe only words or short phrases, some repeated over and over will come through. The next big step and the biggest hurdle to overcome for any psychic endeavor is the discipline to accept what- ever comes into your mind without reacting in any way. We automatically filter all information that comes to us even when we do not realize it. When we are in con- tact with the spirit world, things are going to be made known to us that are contradictory to all of our knowl- edge and all commonly accepted facts. We simply have to receive this information without judging or reacting until there is enough information to finally make some sense however surprising and unexpected. I must

emphasize again that this is very difficult and requires a lot of practice.
Normally when we listen to others talk, we begin to understand where they are going with what they are say- ing. We can even finish their sentences for them! This is not the case with automatic writing. I have written out whole pages without any idea what was being discussed or how it all went together. It was just words. When the messaging stopped and I could look over what had been written, I would be stunned. Some things I would not understand until years later. Some things would require research and investigation. Those who are keyboard whizzes may find that the writing proceeds at a pace that is maddeningly slow. I never could understand how so much information could be conveyed while I slowly wrote out the words (skip any concerns about spelling). However, when the narration stopped, there would be a surprising amount of information that would open up great areas of learning to me. It is really magic infor- mation! For those of you who can type faster than you can talk, once you are able to receive your messages at a keyboard, you will naturally receive great quantities of information that will, no doubt, take a long time to sort out and understand.
Do not get caught up in questions of exactly who is talking to you. You may not be able to write their names anyway with our phonetic system. Sometimes the voice may be a composite of several minds, sometimes it will be just one source and sometimes sources will alternate and change.
tion too, but respect every source with reverence.
Just passively receive all of this informa- It will
be made clear once you have achieved the necessary proficiency, that you will have been tested and selected for your dedication, and, moreover, that you will have been led to this role as a window of spiritual informa- tion. There needs to be a certain amount of humility, forbearance and, yes, silence, about what you learn. Events will unfold which will require you to expose what you know. This can be frustrating. There is a mech- anism at play here, however. Once this information is delivered to our side of the veil through you or others, it is then available in the ethers to whomever sincerely seeks it. You therefore, will have participated in help- ing the spirit world guide those of us in the material world in our struggles here. You may slowly acquire very useful and reassuring wisdom. So, get started and good luck!
