Champions clean up at awards ceremony

RESIDENTS and groups from Tonbridge and Malling were hon- oured for going the extra mile to improve their environment. Theywere named as environmen-

tal champions in the annual scheme run by the borough council and sponsored by its street cleaning and waste collection contractor Veolia. Certificateswere presented to the winners by mayor Cllr Owen Bal- dock. The scheme, launched in 2009 to encourage more people to help im- prove their environment, is open to all Tonbridge and Malling residents and anyone can nominate a person or a group. The winners were rewarded for environmental efforts including lit- ter-picking; development of litter- reporting technology; floodwarden support; promotion of the Volun- tary Litter Code for businesses; pro- tecting woodland and public open spaces. Each of the six individuals, four groups and two goldaward en- vironmental champions received hampers of Kentish produce and vouchers for farmers’ markets. Regional operations manager of

News Consultation

on bus changes RESIDENTS are to be asked what they think of a plan to remove or amend up to 17 rural bus services. Communities in places such as Linton, Marden and Yalding could be affected as Kent County Council tries to shave a further £400,000 off its transport budget. But a new service between Maid-

stone and Kings Hill, via West Malling station, could replace the Nu Venture 123 service. The council has already been

asked to save £1m on its provision of “socially necessary” bus service- son top of last year’s 0.75m. KCC supports about 2.3% of bus

routes in the county which are not commercially viable, but which give people access to work, health- care, shops or education. Among the list of suggestions is

the withdrawal of the No 89 evening service between Maidstone and Coxheath, being replaced by a diversion to service No 5 via Loose and Linton, and the removal of the Monday service from Benover, Yalding, to Paddock Wood. Cabinet member for transport

Cllr Matthew Balfour has said the council will listen to the views of the public during the consultation period until May 15 but it still needs to find savings of £400,000.
