Homes refused on village site
A PROPOSAL for nine homes in SuttonValencewas refused after a parish councillor warned that more traffic in the area could re- sult in deaths. Objecting to the planning appli-
cation for land north of Wind Chimes in Chartway Street, Cllr Maurice Stancombe recalled the sit- uation involving his late wifeVikki, a former parish council clerk for Barming, Chart Sutton, Hunton andWest Farleigh parish councils, who lost her battle with cancer in November 2010. He told Maidstone Council’s planning committee: “On two oc- casions when I had to phone for an ambulance for Vikki, before she died, I was told in no uncertain terms that they could not get an ambulance to her in an emergency. “Do you want it on your con- science that someone in Chartway Street will die if you can’t get an ambulance there?”
Planning officers had recom- mended accepting the scheme, cit- ing the precedent set by an appeal inspector who granted permission for 10 homes on The Oaks nearby. “The current application site is
closer to Sutton Valence than The Oaks site. There are a number of bus stops and routes along the A274 and Chartway Street,” said the report. But the committee had reserva-
tions. Cllr Paulina Stockell spoke of an “accident blackspot on the Warmlake crossroads”, while Cllr Tony Harwood argued that the de- velopment would be inappropriate for a rural area. Cllr Richard Ash said: “We seem
to be expanding Sutton Valence without any services. People mov- ing here will need a car to go to Maidstone to shop.” The committee refused unani- mously, citing the harm it would cause to the open countryside.
