Despite recent statistics showing a decrease in the number of cases being brought to tribunals after the introduction of hearing fees last year, employment specialists at Eric Robinson Solicitors have had an unusually busy start to 2016. partner and head of employment at the firm, Thomas Hunt, explains why

As the Government sought to curb the ever-growing number of disgruntled employees taking their employers to employment tribunals, it could easily be assumed that the reduction in noise emanating from the tribunals meant that business leaders could afford to relax and employment lawyers were seeing less demand for their expertise.

In fact, the very opposite seems to be true. Employers have recognised that if someone is willing to now pay considerable costs to have their case heard, or a solicitor is so convinced of success that they are willing to cover them, the stakes have most definitely risen. It is the ‘quantity versus quality’ scenario – if an employment case is seen on the

horizon, employers are more likely than ever to sit up and pay attention.

To that end, our clients are increasingly keen to invest in prevention rather than cure. For large organisations we are running internal programmes that review contracts, policies, performance reviews, disciplinary and dismissal procedures for when the occasion arises.

For smaller companies that need to be able to manage HR processes themsleves, we have introduced a new software package called ‘NEST’. It can be hard for employers without a designated HR team to keep up to date with the latest legislation and employment issues, so we give access to an

online facility that streams HR processes, saving time and money.

We can now offer a range of over 30 toolkits with guides, forms and letters to manage HR within a business, tailor the online facility by adding or tacking out functions appropriate to a business and we are at the end of the phone if a matter is too big or complicated for a standard process.

It’s not just about cost savings, but the reassurance that comes from being a business that is as self-sufficient as possible, and the legal profession needs to support this by getting closer to clients and sharing knowledge rather than creating an air of mystery through keeping them at a distance.

‘NEST’ partly came from the firm mascot Eric the Owl, but also because the notion of ‘nesting’ is to protect the individuals within it and good HR should do the same for a business.
