MUNSON SHOW TIME

School show is one of best

Evita Valley Park School

THIS was a brilliant and moving production. The huge cast moved about a well-set stage with disci- plined and dramatic effect. A hidden orchestra provided

powerful support to solo singers and ensembles of a high order and the dancing sequences were a pleasure towatch. This production of Evita fol-

lowed other successful shows by Valley Park, such as Miss Saigon and Oh What a LovelyWar. Nicole Kakel played Eva Peron in

her journey from rags to riches, worshipped by the poor of Ar- gentina. With her beautiful voice and terrific costumes, I thinkwe all joined her followers. Harry Harding as Peron gave

strong support as a singer, actor and dancer. Aaron Frith was su- perb as Che, and the rest of the cast was superb. It was hard to believe that we were watching students in a school production.

Patchy road surface not a danger, claims KCC

ABARMINGman is on a mission to get his road resurfaced before a serious accident occurs. Stuart Kerry, of Beverley Road,

believes the street outside his home and the nearby shops is in a dan- gerous state, which could mean large vehicles struggling to stop. Although the highways authority

– Kent County Council – has said the road is in a “reasonable” condi- tion and not a priority for resurfac- ing, Mr Kerry’s pleas to get a written declaration that the road is safe have fallen on stony ground. Mr Kerry said: “My view is that

the condition of the road represents a danger. “As a key bus route with single and double decker buses moving along the length of the road, especially with a steep hill on the junction with Heath Road, the dangers are multiplied. “I work in the commercial vehi-

cle industry and I know the dy- namic power of a 8-14 tonne bus.” KCC highways district manager

for Maidstone Richard Emmett vis- ited the road after complaints and said: “From a cosmetic point of view the road is poor, a concrete

road that has many joints and de- lamination of the previous surface. “However, from a safety point of

view, the road is not deemed to be at a safety-critical level and is un- likely to have any works carried out other than the odd pothole re- paired, as and when required.” But Mr Kerry says the road suf-

fers heavy use from parents taking their children to and from Barming Primary School, which has more than 400 pupils and increased use as a rat run, with housing being built on nearby Hermitage Lane. He said: “Our estate is taking the

brunt of rat-run traffic, which has contributed to its condition. “The surface is severely worn

and crumbling and there is grass growing between the cracks. It has-

n’t been touched for decades and I feel it should be a priority.” The road is inspected every six months and highway steward Alan Holden has admitted that while it is not “aesthetically pleasing” he did not find any defects which re- quired KCC’s urgent attention. KCC’s resurfacing team ex- plained: “We inspect the entire road network on a regular basis, using both mechanical and visual means. A prioritised annual pro- gramme is developed using survey data and taking into account the views of community groups. “Resource pressures are likely to continue going. We need to ensure the available resource is targeted on the right roads at the right time.” Beverley Road is due for inspec-

tion in March, but KCC’s resurfac- ing manager Alan Casson has said: “Beverley Road is unlikely to form part of our resurfacing programme in the foreseeable future. “We are of the view that the road

is in reasonable condition. It is structurally sound and has suffi- cient texture.”
