Stack sites
THURNHAM councillors wel- comed the consultation on two sites for an overflow car park to re- lieve congestion in the area and on the M20 during Operation Stack. Councillors were sad that farm
land would be lost near Stanford to complete the project, but agreed something had to be done to pro- vide a long-term solution to the problem. Councillors will be re- sponding in full to the consulta- tion being held by the Highways Agency.
CONCERN about the potential loss of much-loved shops from the com- munity has prompted Thurnham councillors to write to Maidstone Council with a suggestion. Members are concerned that the revised plan for the parade of shops near The Green at Bearsted still suggests levelling the site. Council- lors felt this could be the “death knell” for traders, who would have to move elsewhere or sit out the re- building programme. Cllr PeterWaite said: “I think we should suggest that the proposed second storey is built on some sort of steel structure that would allow
the tenants to carry on trading. They maywell laugh at this idea because it’s not how they want to do it, but, as a builder, it is feasible. “Given Maidstone Council’s cur-
rent mindset, I think they will ap- prove the plan.We might get some sort of compromise.” Cllr Daniel Skinner said: “I am leaning towards this suggestion as a way of safeguarding the shops. If the parade is knocked down we could end up with a Spar and a kebab shop replacing them. I’m not sure we can make enough of an ar- gument to stop the developers building what they want, particu-
KCC call for bollards cash
COUNCILLORS agreed to con- sider a request from the county council to help fund the fitting of permanent bollards on the ap- proach road to DetlingAerodrome industrial estate. But first, members will ask the county council, which owns the road, to report what it intends doing, how much it will cost and who else has been asked to assist with funding, such as Maidstone Council, the industrial estate users
or the site’s owner. Councillors heard that tempo-
rary, water-filled bollards had been positioned along the highway to stop lorries parking illegally. However, the county council had subsequently bought permanent bollards, but now didn’t have the £14,000 to fit them. Cllr Richard Smith was con-
cerned that the county council had not considered the cost implica- tions before buying the bollards.
larly as the retailers’ leases are com- ing to an end, but we do want to fight to keep our shops in business.” However, the council remained
split over whether adding a second storey with flats above the shops, would cause further traffic chaos in an area that lacks parking. Councillors said The White Horse
car park was already used by cus- tomers unable to park outside the shops and by adding flats above, spaces would be in greater demand. The council is to write to Maid-
stone Council outlining its concern about the demolition of the build- ing.
Precept rise
THE parish council precept will rise next year by 2% – about 80p per household. Members approved the small in-
crease to cover expenditure, which is broadly in line with the KCC council tax increase. Cllr Peter Waite approved the inclusion of £2,000 as a contin- gency fund, adding: “I think this is a useful provision given thatwe may well have to commission some additional reports regarding housing.”
