rage notes JANUARY 2016...

December is a blur, New Year’s Eve has come and gone and we’re all in the throws of keeping up those pesky resolutions we committed ourselves to. Lose weight, exercise more, stop complaining, help others, they are all good concepts but like many “I must dos,” time can sometimes get the better of our best intentions.

Courtney Paul talked about how having

goals is a good thing, but he also shared that being realistic is vital to success. Slow mea- sured progress and moderation are the recipe for achieving long term goals and where your “forever changes” occur. Like Julia Child said, “Everything in moderation... Including moderation.” I’ve always adored that woman and her wisdom. So, let them have cake, let them eat pizza, let them have a beer or some wine, but don’t make it a lifestyle... make it a treat. I think I can live with that, says the man with an open bottle of Malbec on the counter, just waiting to be my evening’s “treat.” Progress that is slow and measured, is definitely something you can accuse Jeremy Denk of. I had the pleasure of talking to this insanely gifted pianist for this issue and what a melodic, joy ride it was. If you’ve ever taken piano lessons, you’ll have a modicum of comprehension for what it’s taking for this genius to reach the skill level he’s at. The endless hours of arpeggios, scales and physi-

Is it possible that another YEAR has passed?

cally demanding exercises are exhausting at best and as relentlessly mind-numbing as the sound of a metronome tapping away in an eternal peck to the forehead, from a woodpecker. I often wonder at how someone subjected to that exquisite torture, manages to break free of the weight of it, to become

the master that Denk has become. Talk about moderation, patience and tenacity. Anthony Rapp was a delightful conversa-

tion. His resume is long and I was surprised to learn the depth of his tenure in theatre, film and television. Most know him from his turn in the many productions of RENT, but few know that he has been at the acting game since the ripe old age of 6-years-old. Living and working in New York with some of the theatre’s finest writers, directors and actors has given him a life filled with fascinating stories. We caught a glimpse of a few of them and if I had the patience to transcribe endlessly, there could have been a great deal more. So much for my patience, determina- tion and tenacity... It’s a new year and there are many exciting

things to come in 2016, least of which is a presidential election and all of its ensuing madness. I don’t remember any being quite so filled with more fodder for a comic in my lifetime. Terrifying, isn’t it? Let’s hope that we practice our scales and

learn to be measured, though I doubt any of the candidates have the patience to sit down at a keyboard and learn the foundations for something like a Mozart piano concerto. Happy New Year! Looking forward to the next twelve months and what is to come.
