Schooner JACOB WINSLOW, Newport to Port Spain, coal, $2.50.
12 July 1900 Derelict Schooner Found. Revenue cutter WOODBURY, early
9702
Wednesday morning, picked up schooner BENJAMIN T. BIGGS of Exeter, N. H., abandoned and on fi re, fi ve miles southeast of Matinicus rock. After extinguishing the fi re the WOODBURY towed the schooner to Rockland. The vessel lay directly in the track of steamers and was a serious menace to navigation. The BIGGS was lumber laden and a large part of her deck was burned, but the cargo in her hold is in good condition. The crew of the BIGGS was taken off by another vessel and landed at Vineyard Haven, a few days ago. This is supposed to be the schooner that the British steamer TYNEDALE picked up, last Sunday, and towed as far as Matinicus rock, where the tow lines parted and the tow was abandoned.
4 January 1901 Another Bark Coming. The schooner GEORGE C. THOMAS which is loading at Bucksport with shooks for Palermo, Sicily, will probably fi nish next week and will sail as soon afterward as possible. Only her lower hold is being fi lled at present since the builders are awaiting the arrival of a shipment of iron knees which are to be placed in position between decks before the space can be fi lled with cargo. The THOMAS which is a fourmaster registers over 1200 tons net and it takes a long time to load her.
The schooner JOHN F. DEERING which has been loading ice at Rockport came up the bay to Bucksport a day or two ago, and took on a cargo of lumber, and shingles. She is fi nished and will probably be towed to sea on Friday. She is bound for Nassau, W. I.
The T. J. Stewart Co. expects another Italian bark within the next month or so to load shooks for the Mediterranean but it is not known which one will be sent. The probability is that the vessel will not arrive for a month at least.
10 January 1901 In the Bath Yards. The fi ve-masted schooner OAKLEY
C. CURTIS will be launched from the yard of Percy & Small, at Bath on Saturday
forenoon, January 19, rigged and ready for sea. The OAKLEY C. CURTIS is owned principally by J. S. Winslow & Co., will hail for Portland and be a valuable addition to the Winslow fl eet, and named in honor of Oakley C. Curtis, the well-known manager of the Randall & McAllister Co. Her dimensions are: 245 feet keel, 46 feet beam, 22 feet hold, probable gross tonnage 2,200 tons and coal capacity 3,700 tons. It is expected that the new four-masted
schooner, MAY V. NEVILLE, building at Houghton Bros.’ yard in Bath, by James W. Hawley, will go overboard on Monday, January 21. A party of New York owners are coming to witness the launching. The four-masted schooner being built at the yard of Kelley, Spear & Co., for Charles S. Hirsch & Co., of New York is one-half planked. The vessel will be launched early in February. She will be rigged on the stocks. Shipping Notes.
The Tug KNICKERBOCKER, Capt.
Dingley, arrived in Bucksport on Thursday, having in tow the schooner DAISY FARLIN, which is to load lumber for New York from the Ashland Mfg Co. of this city. The new Bath built schooner C. CARNEGIE, Capt. Mitchell Reed, arrived at Havana, on January 7, having made the passage from Baltimore in seven days, said to be one of the quickest on record. The CARNEGIE carried out 4,300 tons of coal. Augusta
Judge Andrews is showing no mercy to
the Augusta rum sellers imposing a sentence of 30 days in jail and costs on each of 12 charges of single sale against one William E. Ware.

Novel Signaling at Sea. Submerged Bell Sends Warning
Beneath the Waves – Successful Tests at Boston.
Boston has been experimenting with a novel system of signaling at sea, which consists of a submerged bell, the sound from which is conveyed through the water. The last day of the old year and the century saw the fi rst practical semi-public test of the system, says the New York World. A boat built like a scow, called the SEA BELL, had been fi tted with a large bell and ringing apparatus, and towed to a point
