taught was the wooden boat building pro- gram. My classes always built the larger of the boats. Over the years we built 26-foot cruising boat, a 27-foot inboard outboard, a boat called the Arundel, several mahogany runabouts, a boat called the Fly Fisher, and most recently four boats that were outboard powered sort of designed after the Lyman boats.”

Rick grew up in Western Massachusetts and thinks his love of boats started when his grandfather took him fi shing in the local reservoirs. Then he got a job building houses on Nantucket and while there was asked if he would like to go sailing. As Rick states, “That is where the hook got set.” He went back to Western Massachu- setts and got a job measuring trees. Then a friend’s girlfriend gave him some Wooden- Boat magazines and that is where he saw an advertisement for The Landing School, which is 1978, their fi rst class. After grad- uating he went to Barrington, NH and built wherries and a Francis Herreshoff schooner called JOANN. He then went to work of George Patten in Kittery, who was operating out of a barn at his home. Rick added, “We built all sorts of cool stuff there, including a Royal Lowell lobster boat and a William Garden trawler yacht.” Then it was back to The Landing School, but after two years he felt he needed more experience to be a better teacher and joined Phineas Sprague in Cape Elizabeth rebuilding the 46-foot PROWESS. He was there almost six years before going back to The Landing School for the next 25 years. Rick felt comfortable as the project manager and that is basically what he did at The Landing School. When asked which was more challenging students or employ- ees he said, “They both present their chal- lenges.”

tanks most be fi lled. ZUMWALT was to be powered with a permanent-magnet motor (PMM) and some were concerned that this technology had not been fully evaluated. The motors were later changed to Advanced Induction Motors (AIM) so as not to slow the construction schedule, even though the PMMs’ issues were solved. The generators on this vessel produce 78 megawatts and could power approximately 10,000 households. This is over eight times more than the Burkes and when operational still has 58 mw available to operate weapon systems. This would give enough power to operate a railgun which is a weapon of the future. ZUMWALT was to have an improved air defense system over the Burke class, but questions were raised about this. Then it was thought that building the Arleigh Burke Flight III class would be more cost effective than making changes (addition of BMD) to the Zumwalt class destroyers. The cost of the Flight III Burkes has risen rapidly questioning whether the right decision had been made. One Maine fi sherman is already thank- ful to the PCU ZUMWALT. The captain of

the 45-foot DANNY BOY was suffering chest pains off the southern coast of Maine and needed immediate evacuation at 0300 on 12 December. The US Coast Guard im- mediately sent a helicopter to the scene, but discovered the confi guration of DANNY BOY did not allow them to evacuate the cap- tain. The Coast Guard asked for assistance and ZUMWALT responded by launching a small boat and transferring the captain to the destroyer’s fl ight deck. From there the Coast Guard was able to hoist him up and transport him to a local hospital. ZUMWALT has completed her sea trials and some of the rumours says she performed better than expected. Some wonder if the Navy was prudent in cancelling the other 29 vessels of this class as they feel it leaves a gap in future threats. Even though the Navy has opted for upgraded Burke class destroyers the costs are now similar. The Burke class has its draw backs, namely it cannot supply naval gunfi re was well as the two 155 mm

guns on the Zumwalt destroyers. Due to her increased size ZUMWALT can carry more of everything, including weapons, ammu- nition and provisions. So was the correct decision made?
