6 Maidstone Borough Council Bin it to Win it!
Sign up to The Big Maidstone Food Waste Challenge and you could win a £30 gift
voucher for The Mall Chequers Shopping Centre or family swimming vouchers for Maidstone Leisure Centre.
Maidstone residents are being asked to promise their support to a new food waste incentive scheme designed to cut down on the amount of food waste thrown straight into the rubbish bin. 7 million tonnes of food and drink is thrown away from homes in the UK every year and more than half of this is food and drink we could have eaten. Wasting this food costs the average household £470 a year, rising to £700 for a family with children! (source:

To take the challenge, follow these simple steps
1) Sign up for the challenge and promise your support at
www.maidstone.gov.uk/foodwastechallenge or by sending your name, address and phone number by post to: The Big Maidstone Food Waste Challenge, Maidstone Borough Council, Bircholt Road, Parkwood, Maidstone ME15 9XY
2) Reduce your avoidable food waste as much as possible by planning your meals in advance, using leftovers in tasty recipes or adding scraps to your compost heap if you have one
3) Put ALL your unavoidable food waste (such as vegetable peelings, teabags or bones) straight into your food waste recycling bin, NOT into your rubbish bin
4) Leave your food waste bin out for collection on your rubbish and recycling collection days

The Win Bin
The food waste that we collect is composted on an industrial scale using a specialised technique to produce a nutrient rich compost which is used locally on Kent farms. As a thank you for your commitment to tackling food waste and to helping the environment, all households who
take the challenge and put their food
waste out for collection
will be entered into a quarterly competition to win great prizes. Every quarter, 50 family swimming vouchers for Maidstone Leisure Centre (to be used within three months) and 20 Mall Chequers shopping centre gift vouchers worth £30 each will be awarded to households chosen at random.
