Defibrillator for village
COMMUNITY organisations have joined forces to install a lifesaving defibrillator for heart attack and car- diac patients in Marden. The equipment, which is used to administer electric shocks to re-start the heart, has been fitted to a red phone box near the library and her- itage centre and can be accessed by dialling 999 for a key code. It is a joint collaborative project in- volving Community Heartbeat, Community Warden Mira Martin, Marden History Group, Marden Parish Council and Marden Medical Centre, Kent Fire and Rescue Serv- ice, South East Coast Ambulance Service and Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance. Air Ambulance operational clini-
cal manager Richard de Coverly said: “Let’s hope it’s not needed but it’s great for the village to have it in place and accessible for everyone.” The red phone box in Mardenwas donated by villagers in Benenden and the defibrillator was funded by an anonymous donation of £1,975 to Marden History Group. Chairman David McFarland said:

A WAREHOUSE worker miracu- lously escaped with minor in- juries after a floor collapsed at Claygate Distribution in Marden, trapping him among debris. Kent Fire and Rescue was called
after a mezzanine floor gave away, trapping the man between boxes and a large amount of pallets which fell down. The accident happened in the
Pattenden Lane depot, which was being used to store sanitaryware and bathroom accessories. Five fire appliances, a specialist technical rescue team, police, para-
medics and an air ambulance team worked alongside staff from the firm to rescue the man, who was taken to TunbridgeWells Hospital- with a suspected fractured wrist and cut to his face. The technical rescue team se-
cured the steel floor beams which were in a precarious position, while all teams on the scene worked to- gether to remove pallets and debris to create space around the casualty. Specialist airbagswere used to sta- bilise the pallets above the man while hewas freed from the wreck- age.
The incident has been referred to
the health and safety team at Maid- stone Council. Station manager Matt Deadman
said: “All agencies worked ex- tremely hard to rescue the man, se- curing the heavy pallets surrounding him to allow safe ac- cess. Itwas a very positive outcome in that the man was fortunately able towalk to safety with what are believed to be minor injuries.” Claygate Distribution was estab-
lished in 1990 by brothers Mel and Andrew Streek to distribute bath- room products to the trade sector.
