Editor’s desk Morale deficit

Dentists in Northern Ireland are the lowest paid and suffer from the lowest levels of morale, according to two recent reports. The Dental Earnings and Expenses report for 2013/14 and the HSCIC Dental Working Hours, 2012/13 & 2013/14 Motivation Analysis, paint a worrying picture of the profession in the province, but it is maybe not as straightforward as it seems.
Low-paid dentists have low morale – seems obvious, doesn’t
it? However, the report seems to suggest that poor morale in NI was more a case of the dentists working longer hours, carrying out more health service and administrative work and taking less leave, rather than just because they are paid less than their counterparts in the rest of the UK.

the report together, should be commended for trying to drill down into the actual reasons why the profession is unhappy in NI. Now that we know what we know, what can be done about it? More funding, as the BDA suggests, would clearly help, but conditions and the level of bureaucracy surely need to be addressed as well.
