PRESIDENT’S PERSPECTIVE
Nebraska Trucking Executive Committee GREETINGS FROM LINCOLN!
I hope everyone has had a great summer and like me looking forward to the cooler fall temperatures and changing of the seasons. Summer has gone by so fast that I’m sure it won’t seem long before we’re wishing everyone a Happy New Year.
My topic for this edition’s article starts with a huge thank you to all of our 166 members who, when asked recently to give their opinion in an online survey for ATRI’s (American Transportation Research Institute) annual research project of our industry’s top 10 issues — did just that and responded. Tis was 166 responses within the first two weeks that the survey was launched. Even more notable was the fact that Nebraska’s responses were by a large margin the highest of all states. We were double the number of the next closest state which by no coincidence is much larger in land mass and has a greater number of carriers based in their state.
What can we derive from this? First, it is important to note that we now live in a world of BIG data. Good data collectors hope for a broad and varied response from a cross section of responders which policy makers can use to develop data driven policies and procedures which hopefully can make our lives safer, more productive and overall, one would think “better”.
However, what happens when we become complacent and apathetic? We don’t open that email requesting information or fill out that survey? What if the data collectors only hear one side of the story? Well, incomplete or inaccurate data driven policies and procedures have the possibility of making our lives less secure, less productive and overall “worse”.
As an industry we are very fortunate to have a “great” data collector like ATRI that serves a very diverse group of companies large and small from every region of the United States that moves almost every and any kind of freight from very short distances to very long hauls. We live and work in an environment where the term “one size DOES NOT fit all” applies everyday.
Is it any wonder that we have a chaotic and confusing system of laws and regulations that govern trucking when we are trying to fit so many round pegs into the laws and regulations’ square holes?
Can this be fixed as big data being collected every day begins to matter? Do we now have the knowledge and ability to be able to digest these larges amounts of data to start to make sense out of otherwise chaotic systems? From everything I’m reading it appears that there are systems that can take these large caches of data in one side and come up with predictable outcomes that make sense on the other.
Te only thing that will prevent a full rounded, well researched outcome that will allow us to have flexibilty to increase productivity, lower cost, make our industry more profitible and our workers happier and all of our lives “better” will be our willingness to share our own data, our own opinions and experiences with great data gatherers that we trust, like ATRI. Please go to http://atri-online. org/2015/08/04/industry-asked-to-rank-top-conerns-4/ to share YOUR opinion today. Tanks! Until next edition…
