Right as rain – the right rainwater system for the job

he first consideration when choosing a rainwater system should be, will it do the job? But do we actually ask this question? For an invention that dates back to the Indus
Valley Civilisation in 3000 BC and the Romans bringing drainage technology to Britain in 47 AD, gutters and downpipes have been something we have taken for granted and are commonplace in our everyday lives. We probably don’t ask enough questions or
do the research to get the best out of the rain- water system we choose. Before a rainwater system is purchased for a self-build, development or regeneration project we should consider:
•Capacity for flow rate •Life expectancy/Value for money •Ease of installation •Style and look •Green credentials
Why size is important
Water – even small amounts – can do untold damage to the structure of your home. Roofs, foundations and exterior sidings can be penetrated by small amounts of water leading to interior damage. Damage will start around the roof structure,
soffits and foundation. Gutters and downpipes are installed to move the rainwater away from vulnerable areas helping to protect the buildings foundations. It is important that when choosing a
rainwater system you ensure that the gutters and downpipes are capable of taking the amount of water which will flow from your roof when encountering one of our infamous Great British downpours and efficiently channel it away via the downpipes. Either you or your architect will have calculated the gutter flow rate for your house or extension and it is wise then to ensure that the gutter system you choose will be able to cope with this flow. A reputable rainwater system supplier will be
able to advise you on this size, offering a deep flow gutter option where necessary.
