a garden edging product, and it is still requested from time to time, most people have now come to the conclusion that its benefits do not come close to outweighing its costs. Stainless steel edging comes at a huge financial premium and does not live up the billing that most people give it. The key point to consider with stainless is that it is ‘stain less’ not ‘stain free’. Stainless steel will begin to show marks of rust over the course of a few years and, although it starts off an attractive shiny silver, it will quickly fade to a dull grey. Understandably,
if one is going to pay the stainless premium, one might expect a product to hold up better to weathering problems. Two new sectors have thrown up new issues
for the steel edging industry over the last few years. The first is the growing popularity of roof gardens. Although still relatively rare in the self- build sector, they are become more widely seen. Steel edging can now be made with drainage holes in the front face and with sys- tems to connect the edging into the roof itself. The other challenge that the industry has had
to rise to is the ever increasing use of artificial grass in gardens. For a number of years, the
only edging available to use with artificial grass was wooden, which would last considerably less time than the grass itself. A steel edging product is now made specifically for this sector making installers lives easier and ensuring that buyers of artificial lawns can rest assured that their edging will last at least as long as the grass carpet. All in all, steel edging might not be the sexiest
product you will install in your self-built property, but it might just be the product that ensures that wow factor and makes sure that the external works match the quality that you will have insisted on for the property itself.
