Blue sky thinking in Liverpool

Chair of the House of Commons Transport Select Committee, Louise Ellman MP visited the Port of Liverpool on 7 August to inspect progress at the £100m biomass terminal project. She met with senior representatives from Peel Ports and Drax Group on a tour of the new biomass terminal which will soon support the EU’s largest decarbonisation project at Drax Power Station. The first phase of the new terminal will

open in October when four trains a day begin carrying wood pellets, shipped into Liverpool from North America, to Drax in Yorkshire. Up to ten train loads of pellets will travel to the power station every day in custom-made biomass rail wagons once the terminal is fully completed in 2016.

Speakers lined up for Cool Logistics

Food and agriculture supply chain analyst at Rabobank, Paul Bosch, and Steve Wiggins from the UK- based Overseas Development Institute (ODI) will be among the speakers at the seventh Cool Logistics Global Conference in Bruges, on 29 September – 1 October. Mr Bosch will provide a unique

perspective on the global food economy, covering a range of issues such as weather patterns, demographic shiſts and trade barriers. As one of the authors of a recent

ODI report on the rising cost of a healthy diet,

Steve Wiggins

has reviewed the increasing discrepancy between fresh produce and processed food prices in key emerging markets, including Brazil, Mexico, Korea and China. The report suggests a tax on

‘less healthy foods’ in combination with subsidies for fruit and vegetables implying that this may halt the effects of the looming world obesity crisis. “These are vital

factors for helping global food production

as well as the combined transport and logistics sector to revisit and improve the deployment of capacity and technology along the perishable supply chain,” says Cool Logistics managing director, Alex von Stempel. Other speakers lined up include

Chayenne Wiskerke, managing director of JWK Wiskerke Onions, Netherland’s premier onion exporter and Alexis Michel, group logistics and reefer senior vice president of CMA CGM. http://coollogisticsresources.

FIATA announces Young Forwarder finalists

DHL Road taps into single Asian market

DHL Global Forwarding has rolled out an integrated road freight network linking five key Asian cities - Singapore, Penang, Bangkok, Hanoi and Shenzhen. Delivered under DHL AsiaConnect’s Less-than- Truckload (LTL) banner, it offers daily departures and a consistent level of service. DHL AsiaConnect was launched in 2011 connecting Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand and now links to the existing Vietnam-China connection.

Typical transit times include

one day from Singapore to Penang or five days from Shenzhen to Bangkok. The latter compares with 13 days by sea and is only one day slower than by air while costing significantly less, says DHL. The road freight network

features GPS-equipped trucks for safety and tracking and are armed with anti-hijacking tools. They are constantly in touch with DHL’s Command Center, should the need arise.

DHL is introducing the service

at a time when China’s ‘One Belt, One Road’ initiative is taking shape and expected to strengthen cross- border economic ties in markets between Europe and Asia. The land-based Silk Road Economic Belt aims to enhance trade links across the markets between Europe and Asia. At the same time, the ASEAN

Economic Community single market is due to be established by the end of this year.

the transport of Liquid Argon, Copper Cathodes, High Fashion Garments and Air Separation Plant. The regional finalists were

due to travel to this year’s FIATA’s World Conference in Taipei, Taiwan on 8-13 September to present their dissertations to the judging panel, from which the International Award winner will be selected and presented with the award during the conference.

FedEx shows its hand in TNT takeover

FedEx has made an offer for takeover target TNT Express of €8.00 per ordinary share, which the

latter’s board has

recommended to shareholders. The two companies add that TNT’s Central Works Council and the European Works Council are both positive about the move. PostNL, which currently holds 14.7% of TNT Express shares, says it will also tender its shares under

the offer. Earlier, the European

Commission said on 31 July that it had started a Phase II review of FedEx’s intended public offer to buy TNT Express. It says that this is the next step in its analysis before coming to a decision. The transaction is also being reviewed by other antitrust agencies, including the Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) in China

and Conselho Administrativo de Defesa Econômica (CADE) in Brazil. Subject to the necessary approvals, closing of the offer is anticipated in the first half of 2016.

TNT Express also revealed

that chief executive Tex Gunning would quit if the launch is successful and will be replaced by FedEx’s regional president for Europe, David Binks.
