saw their rod disappear into the water!

A gentle touch.. Jakub congratulates the brave angler after he put out a fire in his bivvy

the Dutch captain in front of our bivouac. He gesticulates angrily and takes me with him to his son standing nearby. At first I don’t know what’s going on but the light in the bathroom makes it clear – the boy’s hand is burned badly. In no time at all there are a few people awake and guys from the Netherlands are on their way to hospital. Fortunately, everything turned out well and in the morning the young injured Dutchman is ready to fight again. So, what happened? A mobile phone in a suitcase overheated and began to burn very quickly, the whole suitcase caught fire. Seeing the danger to the bivvy, beds and all of the equipment, bravely, the boy threw the suitcase out of the bivvy, but unfortunately he burned his arm doing this. He did at least he get a small consolation at the party of champions – a special prize for his bravery. In the morning the battle continued between

the team FN Motol Hospital and the Italian team. Ivan and Martin from FN Motol Hospital got their heaviest carp – 13.4 kg and 14.5 kg, the Italians immediately countered with weights 17.2 kg and 15.5 kg. It was real excitement right until the end, especially because of the rule where the average weight of the three heaviest fish counted towards the result. Due to the colder weather other teams

succeeded in the end too – WCC Family had two at 11.0 kg – these carp that catapulted them to third position, the Netherlands landed an 8.5 kg specimen and the Danish anglers landed their first carp 40 minutes before the end – although it didn’t change the final results it was a nice 13.5 kg fish.

Closing champions’ party

The World Carp Classic Junior ended on Saturday, May 30th at 16:00. The announcement of results took place at a stage in front of a fantastic crowd of almost one thousand people. During the championship there were 33 carp

the Italians put in a protest against Honza Hubka and team FN Motol. They didn’t like that Honza helped the boys land a fish - or that he touches rods. The case is, however, unfounded and the head marshal and referee, Andy Chambers, reject the complaint. It’s worth noting that (due to the obvious reason that they’re from hospital) it wasn’t easy to create a team FN Motol. To form the team, both boys from this team were younger than the rules allowed and therefore Honza had to be close to the boys permanently primarily because of safety issues. During the afternoon, I went to visit the

complex for the accompanying programme of events, located nearby Katlov. Lots of children were interested in the angling school at the shore of small pond right next to Katlov. Famous carp

experts like Milan Tychler, Karel Nikl or Pepa Konopásek carefully helped each of the children who visited. It was nice to see the children enjoying angling and how every single little carp, tench or roach that was landed made them so happy. The entire complex was bringing pleasure to both children and adults. What will the approaching night bring us?

According to the weather forecast, it should be little colder which could bring some hope for the teams at the deeper parts of the lake.

Day three: a wild night and finally .. joy

That night we’re woken up at about half past midnight. The reason is not a giant carp, but

caught and their average weight was 12.1 kg. The winners were the Italian team with the average weight of three heaviest fish 16.46 kg, second place went to the hospital team FN Motol – 13.60 kg and third was the team WCC Family with two carp weighing 11 kg. Other teams caught one fish (Czech Republic, Slovakia, England, Germany, Netherland, Denmark and Poland) or they had no success. The heaviest fish was caught by the England team – a brilliant 17.8 kg. At the final party and concert there was

great atmosphere and it was an excellent way to celebrate and bring to a close the first year of WCCJ. After a perfectly organised event, it is also important to note that organisers and sponsors managed to raise enough money for professional devices for CLIP (Childhood Leukaemia Investigation Prague). Let’s hope we will meet next year at Katlov and you will be there too!
