Santa Rosa, Ca. ~ In the last column I asked you to think about a number of questions as- sessing your desire to attend college or take another path. However, I realized that I only gave you a brief defi nition of the basic differences between a college, a four year institution and a university, a college that
offers
graduate work be- yond the bachelor’s degree, sometimes including law and medicine.
The quote on this
page gives you a cynical differ- ence, but there is some truth in what Ciardi is saying. Colleges tend to be smaller, more focused on students, with smaller class sizes and teach- ers, who really love teaching. For a public college, check out The Evergreen State College (WA) and for a private col-

The university
is usually devel- oped from an exist- ing college when graduate programs and professional schools are added into the mission of the now university. A university

fessor has a great deal of pres- sure to publish articles in his/ her fi eld, compete for research grants and other awards, mon- etary and professional.
Ac-
companying changes are of- ten increased class size, use of teaching assistants, that is, graduate students working on their own degrees who teach smaller groups of students drawn from a large lecture class. The university’s grow-
ing size and new purpose often creates a learning distance be- tween professors and students. Check out the University of California at Berkeley as a publicly-funded uni- versity and Yale Uni- versity as a privately endowed university. The question is: if you wish to go to col- lege/university, what type of learning envi- ronment do you want and can learn best in? Small, medium, large? Rural, urban, suburban? If these criteria mat- ter to you, you can use them to research colleges/universities so you fi nd ones that will fi t what you want. A Bit of History: The world’s
fi rst University was established by a woman in Fez, Morocco in 859 by Fatima Al – Firi. Universities then followed in Egypt, Iran, Italy, France,

leges and universities were viewed as places of learning were a person, usually male, could become a well- rounded member of
society, thoughtful citizen, and contributing member to the so- ciety. It was also a way for the elite to meet and make lasting friendships. These connections often lead to jobs, political ap- pointments and other perks not available to those who didn’t or couldn’t follow this path. In the 21st Century, more people are seeking a degree. In 2014 nearly 40% of working women and men had college degrees. There are many choic- es for college and the costs now vary considerably. Many good paying jobs that didn’t require a degree are being lost as we shift from an industrially-based economy. Going to college has for many become the means to improve their lives. Now, much more than ever before, the reason for going to

A diner was agitated that the waiter had brought him no spoon with his coffee.
“This coffee,” he said loud enough for most of the other patrons to hear, “is going to be pretty hot to stir with my fi ngers.”
The waiter reddened, made a hasty retreat to the kitchen and returned shortly with another cup of coffee.
“This one isn’t so hot, sir,” he beamed.
