No neighbourhood plan for parish

THURNHAM Parish Council members have decided against pro- ducing a neighbourhood plan for the area.

Discussions were held following

Meetings normally held on the third Monday of each month at the Marriott Tudor Park Hotel. Publicwelcome.

CHAIRMAN:Daniel Skinner CLERK: Sherrie Babington 01634 867173

Building plan MEMBERS supported a planning application to put a two-storey wood-clad building on the show- ground at Detling. The application involved pullingdownan old build- ing to makeway for the extension.

Operation Stack COUNCILLORS expressed their concern about the traffic chaos being caused in the area by Opera- tion Stack and what action might be taken.  See our full report on page 28.

an invitation from Bearsted Parish Council, which is making prelimi- nary moves to create one, asking if members were interested in team- ing up.

Thurnham councillors felt that

the parish did not have the reserves to fund such an expensive and labour-intensive endeavour. Others felt the parish had more in common

with parishes to the north, such as Detling or Hollingbourne, while some felt that unless the neigh- bourhood plan could be created be- fore Maidstone Council completed its Local Plan, it would hold little weight. Cllr John Horne pointed out that Harrietsham had been “ripped in two” by differences of opinion re- garding proposed developments in the community and said profes- sional help – out of the reach of many parishes –was needed to put such a complex document together.

Concert booking at church

THE Detling Singers have booked St Mary the Virgin Church, Thurnham as the venue for a concert later in the year. It follows community efforts to

make wider use of the facility and the news that someone may be ap- pointed tomarket the venue. Cllr Richard Smith, who has been helping to involve the community in activities, said he was delighted by the news and hoped more people would make use of the excellent

acoustics, space and facilities the church had to offer. Members made various sugges-

tions, including using the church as a cinema, but agreed to return to their next meeting with a list of ideas for other church uses. The public is, as always, invited to

attend the meeting and bring along their ideas on September 21. The meeting which takes place at the Tudor Park Hotel on the A20, starts at 7.30pm.

downsmail.co.uk Homes strategy

COUNCILLORS agreed to support a borough-wide initiative for a re- duction in the housing proposed in Maidstone Council’s draft local plan. The Kent Association of Local Councils (Kalc) is pressing the coun- cil to adopt a calculation suggesting 10,000 homes would be more realis- tic than the borough council’s pro- jected 18,560 from 2011 to 2031. Cllr John Horne, who is also a Kalc member, said: “A reduced number would reduce our need for employ- ment growth; the impact on green- field sites and infrastructure. We would then get our power back by having a five-year housing strategy.”

Wreaths gift A CHEQUE for £36 has been made to the Royal British Legion by the parish council. The contribution is for the wreaths being laid in the area by the Rev John Corbyn in remem- brance of soldiers who died in WWI.

Fuel thefts TWO motorists drove off from Detling filling station without pay- ing for their fuel and a theft from the forecourt shop was reported.
