Calgary Horticultural Society Workshops Iron-clad Trees Thursday, July 16 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Instructor: Kath Smyth There are many challenges for grow- ing trees in the home landscape, such as reflective heat from buildings or pavement, soil that is exceptionally dry or too wet, full shade or fierce soil compaction. Granted, some sites are just too difficult for any plant to survive and grow things. However, most locations do have a plant solu- tion. This class will focus on some of the trees that will endure, even flourish under the toughest of conditions while at the same time providing visual interest through flowers, bark or fall color. Site selection, pruning tips and other general care suggestions will also be provided.

What Now? Dividing Perennials and Putting Your Garden to Bed Saturday, Sept. 12 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Instructor: Kath Smyth In the series, 'What Now?', horticul- turist Kath Smyth walks you through the year in the life of a garden. She will provide a whistle-stop tour of techniques, tips, tricks and advice on seasonal tasks so that you know what to do and when to do it. Sessions will be held at the Society office and the maximum number of participants is 20. September and October will cover when and how to put your garden to bed as well as dividing perennials, planting trees and shrubs, protecting tender plants over the winter, develop- ing new lawns and storing tubers over winter. Individual workshops are $40 for members and $50 for non-members.
