Puschkinia (Puskinia libantica) Zone: 4-8 Height: 10 cm (4 in.) Bloom time: Early spring. Colour: Bluish-white blooms with blue stripes. Growing conditions: Plants prefer full sun or part shade.


Planting: Plant bulbs 8 cm (3 in.) deep and 8 cm (3 in.) apart in sandy soil.


Special notes: Striped Squill, as puskinia is also known, has incredibly delicate looking blooms. Bulbs prefer to be left alone once planted and will self-seed, so it can spread generously over time.


Scilla Squill (Scilla siberica) Zone: 3-8 Height: 20 cm (8 in.) Bloom time: Early spring. Colour: Blue.


Growing conditions: Full sun to part shade locations are toler- ated, position them in good, light, well-drained soil. Planting: 8-10 cm (3-4 in.) deep and 10 cm (4 in.) apart.


Special notes: Plant bulbs close together for showy displays. Flowers are tiny, nodding, star-like flowers in some of the best shades of blue. Bulbs grow well under trees, in rock gardens and woodland gardens and are resistant to deer. Plants are poison- ous so they may not be suitable in a garden with children.


Tulip (Tulipa) Zone: 3-8 Height: 16-61 cm (6 in. - 2 ft.) Bloom time: Early to late spring.


Colour: Apricot, pink, salmon, red, deep maroon and white. Flowers may have double, ruffled, fringed, or lily-shaped petals.


Growing conditions: Plants do best in full sun in the north and will tolerate very light shade in hotter areas.


Planting: Plant large bulbs 15-16 cm (5-6 in.) apart and smaller bulbs 8-10 cm (2-3 in.) apart.


Special notes: Part of the lily family, there are 75 wild species of tulips not to mention the species and cultivars grown for gardens. These are showy, pretty flowers, perfect for spring.

Winter Aconite (Eranthis hyemalis) Zone: 4-7 Height: 8-20 cm (3-8 in.) Bloom time: Late winter to early spring. Colours: Yellow and white.


Growing conditions: Plant in light sun to light shade, they will adapt to any soil.


Planting: Plant tubers 10 cm (4 in.) apart and 6-8 cm (2-3 in.) deep. Be sure to soak tubers overnight before planting.


Special notes: In their natural habitat, Eranthis can be found growing on forest floors, enjoying the sunlight of early spring before the trees have leafed out. They are especially stunning when planted in large drifts under trees or in rock gardens.
