Jan’s garden of
sunshine, shrubs and happiness
Jan examines one of his hydrangeas. T he slanting morning sun paints the beautifully
manicured front yard with splashes of gold, picking out the reflective greens and yellows that have been
planted to highlight the deep, rich burgundies and darker greens of the meticulously chosen shrubbery. This, you would say with delight, is a true, low mainte-
nance garden. The soil is neatly covered in chocolate cedar bark, the kind that breaks down slowly. Plants are present- ed here, each allowed to show off its individual merits like so many beauty queens parading on a stage. Jan Pedersen’s Assiniboine riverside property illustrates
his long experience in the gardening field. Born of a garden- ing family, he is one of the former owners of Shelmerdine Garden Centre. Now he has broadened that expertise as the regional representative for Kelowna’s Bylands Nurser- ies.
His garden also speaks of his well-ordered aesthetic
sense. Bright blue dwarf spruce illuminate their corners, while
budding hydrangeas offer showy promise. Pink flowered ‘Gold Flame’ spireas march around a columnar apple, while tidily mounded shrubs, their symmetry disciplined by the upright forms of Karl Foerster grasses, vie for atten- tion with their leaf colour, shape and texture. The scarlet seed pods of Acer tataricum ‘Hot Wings’ lift
the eye in curiosity. What blooms so hotly this high above the ground?
