thes, otherwise known as Persian shield, commands attention as it stands out against the glowing, yellow- green leaves of Weigela ‘Burgundy Fire’ with its red stems. A pink, cream and green leaved mound of Euphorbia ‘Ascot Rainbow’ rises above a bed of yellow lysimachia. The plants in this garden are all about texture and
foliage colour. Dogwood and sedum both flaunt cream and white
variegated leaves. The mauve-pink flowers of stately Joe Pye weed call out to butterflies, birds and bees. And around every corner there are plants you have never seen before: a standard with branch tips bear- ing bright cream leaves like a truncated handkerchief tree, a separated hedge of five compact, bright-green ornamental viburnum around the front patio, a choc- olate leafed Black Lace elder with its feathery, deeply divided foliage. You could spend a half a day just looking and admiring each plant. But this is not the end of the journey. In the back
yard, bordered by the lazy Assiniboine River, the private garden is filled with just as many surprises and examples of good gardening taste and wonderful plant choices. Here, a touch of the tropics adds a note of luxury
