Variegated duranta has beautiful summer flowers. It’s hard to believe that this garden is only five years old.
Jan and his wife, Kristin, have created a remarkable haven in a very short time. It feels like home. Kristin bakes cook- ies for an early morning get together. It all whispers peace and relaxation – no stress here, just good people and great plants. Working for Bylands Nurseries out of Kelowna has been a
positive experience for Jan after the hectic life as an owner of a small business. Although he enjoyed his time at Shelmer- dine, this world is much less stressful. Jan’s new life is not hard to take – he gets to visit garden
centres all day long. He gets to talk gardening and rub shoul- ders with garden people all over Saskatchewan, Manitoba and North Western Ontario. And he gets to come home from each trip to a warm-hearted, caring wife who shares his passion for the garden. Almost a decade has passed since Manitoba Gardener
featured the story of Jan’s other garden and his previous life. Around that time, Jan served on the board of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and the Manitoba Gardener was still a fairly new magazine. So much as changed in the intervening years and yet so much is the same: this is the 100th issue of the Manitoba Gardener; the WSO is better and stronger than ever; and Jan still has a beautiful garden. This June, the WSO featured Jan’s garden as one of its
three gala gardens in its annual Garden Soiree. As the music played and the guests mingled, Jan must have thought of the many shining moments that have punctuated the last ten years – moments like this one just passed: music filling the air, the garden glowing in the sunset, and the river flowing timelessly just beyond his garden. i
