Lawmakers Increase Fuel Tax forRoads and Bridges

Nebraska lawmakers this year increased


the state’s fuel taxes by six cents over four years thanks in part to the advocacy of the Nebraska Trucking Association and its members. Te increase to about 31.6 cents per gallon is expected to raise an additional $75 million


per year by 2019. Te money will be split evenly between the state, cities, and counties for Nebraska’s 100,000 miles of roads and 20,000 bridges. Nebraska’s gas tax, currently 25.6 cents per


gallon through June 30, has not been raised since 2008. It’s divided into three parts: a fixed rate that was 10.3 cents per gallon, a wholesale rate of 14.5 cents, and a variable rate, currently


.8 cents per gallon, set by the director of the Nebraska Department of Roads. Te law adds 1.5 cents to the fixed rate each of the next four years through January 2019. Prior to the session, Duane Acklie,


founder of Crete Carrier, encouraged the NTA to support a fuel tax increase, which it did despite the fact that the tax would cost
