One Outstanding Foal at a Time By Holly Simensen

eing successful in modern sport horse breeding takes not only a great deal of knowledge about both your mares and the stallions to which they will be mated, but also the sensitivity to
recognize and understand conformation, soundness, type and temperament. Te days of breeding a favorite mare without regard to her genetic background and becoming a recognized and successful breeder are long gone. Success in breeding requires a tremendous amount
of knowledge. Analyzing several recent outstanding equine individuals will give you insight into the mind- set of their excellent breeders—and allow you to learn from them.
Don Deluxe Te first horse we’ll consider is the stallion Don Deluxe. Tis overwhelming winner of the 2013 Oldenburg Stallion Licens- ing was not the early favorite. But by that November he had blos- somed into a tall, elegant, filled out, powerful and confident young stallion, a breathtaking mover. He was all that his genetic back- ground would suggest. (A second colt from this crop with the Egita dam line also finished in the premium ring and as a three-year-old was the Landers champion in Rastede.) His dam’s noteworthy pedigree was first observed as brilliant in the stamm line of Egita II, bred by the Lueschen family in 1958. Tree separate sections of this outstanding mare line were nurtured by the Greten family (Wardenburg), the Schroeder fam- ily (Oldenburg) and of course the Lueschen family (Wardenburg). Each section has produced numerous outstanding competition horses, licensed stallions and State Premium and Elite mares. Tese include European champion mares as well as international Grand Prix dressage horses and jumpers. In their day, many of these rid- ing horses fetched record-setting prices in Oldenburg auctions, culminating with the 910,000 euros (well over $1 million at the time) paid for Don Deluxe. Don Deluxe was, because of his size, brought along slowly as
a three-year-old. In 2015, as a rising four-year-old, he achieved an absolutely brilliant winning score in his stallion test in Denmark. His marks reflect what one hopes for from this most prestigious line. His Grand Prix sire De Niro, by horse of the century Don- nerhall, helped create his outstanding ridability. His first born foal, a late March 2015 filly, appears to be just as exquisite as her sire. Now were all the mares from this line so expensive as to break
their respective breeders’ banks? No, in fact many were quite af- fordable; they simply took perseverance to find.
Don Deluxe, an outstanding example of a well bred Oldenburg stallion.
Elfenfeuer Next we will look at a very young 2010 States Premium candidate mare, Elfenfeuer. Born in 2007, this young dressage mare was Reserve Champion Five-Year-Old at the 2012 U.S. Young Horse Championships. In 2013, she was fourth in the FEI Championship and was Grand Prix Amateur Horse of the Year in 2014, earning this last honor at just seven years old. Although we do not suggest that young horses be ridden at such
a high level, it should be noted that Elfenfeuer offered to complete her lessons because the work was easy for her. Is she strong enough to perform a full test against international-level horses? Not yet, but we look forward to observing her on the international stage success- fully defending her grace and ability when the time is right. Bred by Ewald Grotelueschen (Wardenburg), Elfenfeuer de-
scends from the famous Elfi dam line, which also produced the fine stallions and ambassadors Depardieu, De Vito, De Kuyper and Razzmatazz. She is a full sister of the 1C premium stallion Florian. Her breeder has carefully honed his broodmare lines and has em- phasized character, ridability, soundness and good movement. Tis lovely chestnut mare by the stallion Florencio out of States
Premium Elite Elfensonne was chosen by Dr. Evelin Schlotmann from the winter special auction in 2010 to enhance Judy Yancey’s broodmare band. States Premium mares of this pedigree and quality
