Count of HOY Winners by Breed OVERALL
FEI ONLY
Steffen Peters & Legolas 92 are the Grand Prix HOY winners in 2014. Shown here the duo win the Grand Prix at the Capistrano Dressage Interna- tional CDI in March 2015.
The Oldenburg stallion Sandro Hit domi-
nated the FEI levels with his offspring. He was the sire of four FEI-level HOY winners. Sandro Hit has also been ranked in either first or second place each of the last five years on the USEF’s Leading Dressage Sires list. As noted above, Sandro Hit (Sandro Song / Ramino / Welt As) also sired Sir Donnerhall. Rotspon and the Holsteiner stallion Come Back II (Cor de la
Bryere / Landgraf I / Montevideo) each sired three FEI winners. Stallions who each sired three winners overall were the
Hanoverian Don Frederico ( Donnerhall / Consul), the Dutch Warmblood Johnson (Jazz / Flemmingh), the Holsteiner Raymeister GP (Rantares / Call Me Penny xx), the Dutch Warmblood Rousseau (Ferro / Roemer) and the Dutch Warm- blood UB40 (Olivi / Michelangelo). Thirteen stallions sired two winners each: Bonheur,
Hanoverian (Brentano II / Roncalli xx); Bugatti Hilltop, Hanoverian (Bergamon / Rubinstein I); Contango, Oldenburg (Contender / Kronprinz); Fidertanz, Rhinelander (Fidermark / Ravallo); Florencio, Westphalian (Florestan / Weltmeyer); Furst Piccolo, Rhinelander (Fidermark / Mephistopheles); HS Wistar, Hungarian Warmblood (Wishes and Dreams / Magyar Brado); Loerke, Hanoverian (Lauries Crusador xx / Welt- meyer); Rambo, Danish Warmblood (Racot / Ibikus); Royal Blend, Hanoverian (Rotspon / Laurie’s Crusador xx); Tsjerk 328, Friesian (Feitse / Nanne); Vivaldi, Dutch Warmblood (Krack C / Jazz); and Wolkenstein II, Hanoverian (Weltmeyer / Wendekries). It’s also interesting to see the “who’s who” of famous Warmblood dressage stallions, such as Weltmeyer (ranked #1
34 May/June 2015 Gigha Steinman
on the USEF Leading Dressage Sires list for 2014), Fidermark, Lauries Crusador xx, Jazz, Donnerhall, and Rubinstein, who appear repeatedly in the pedigrees of the sires of the HOY winners.
Final Toughts The highest Grand Prix honor went to Legolas 92, a 2002
Westfalen gelding owned by Four Winds Farm LLC and ridden by Steffen Peters. Legolas is by Laomedon, a Lauries Crusa- dor xx son, and out of the Florestan II mare Furstin. Glancing at the breeders of the number one horse at
each level, American breeders produced the winner at Train- ing Level (Nancy Steger of Sacramento, CA), at Second Level (Victoria Lamas Wanner of Elizabethtown, PA) and at Third Level (Angela Barilar of Chestertown, MD). German breed- ers were responsible for breeding the winners at First Level, Fourth Level, Prix St. Georges, Intermediate I and Grand Prix. A Dutch breeder bred the Intermediate II winner. Learning bloodlines and following pedigrees and the
breeds like this may seem tedious to a non-breeder, but it’s an art form to many breeders and a helpful guide to Warm- blood shoppers. Patterns and commonalities like we see in the pedigrees of the USDF Horse of the Year winners help confirm the bloodlines that consistently produce top performers. Clearly, it is more than luck that plays into the breeding of a successful dressage horse!
