What Should We Wear?
We have a simple uniform in the nursery of a white polo shirt, red jumper or cardigan and black joggers. As a lot of the day is spent being active outside children should wear trainers or plimsolls. In wet weather they should have welly boots and a warm waterproof coat. We would ask that children don’t wear jewellery in the nursery as this can be a health hazard and is also easily lost.
We do a wide variety of activities and a lot of these activities involve glue, glitter, sand, mud, paint, dough, water and other various messy materials. We do have aprons for the children to wear but accidents can happen. Because of this each child will need to bring a set of spare clothes in case of accidents. The spare clothes don’t have to be uniform but the bag should contain spare pants, socks/tights, t-shirt, trousers/dress, jumper/ cardigan.
To encourage independence please encourage your child to be involved when getting dressed.
How can I support my child?
At Mission Grove we believe that parents and carers are a child’s first and most important teachers. Therefor it is very important for us to work closely with you to build on what you have already taught your child and give them the best possible start.
One of the biggest things that your child will develop whilst at nursery is their sense of independence, from selecting toys and activities to dressing themselves. It is important that when children start at the nursery they can go to the toilet by themselves and wash their hands. They should be wearing pants or knickers and not pull- ups. We are happy to deal with a few accidents and help develop your child’s confidence and toileting skills. We can also offer advice and support if you are finding toilet training challenging.
You can help develop your child’s independence at home by leaving a little bit more time before going out for them to try and put on their own socks, shoes and coats. They will need some help at first but will quickly develop the skill and confidence to do it themselves, if given the time and encouragement to persevere. Asking your child to try and put one arm in their coat or getting them to pull up their zip once it is attached at the bottom are great places to start.
The main way that children learn and develop at a young age is through their play. You should set aside some time each day to play with your child, doing an activity that they have chosen. Going to a play park to give your child the opportunity to communicate and play with children of their own age is hugely beneficial and really helps to develop their social skills.
Reading to your child at home is also vital if they are to develop a love of books and reading. Walthamstow Library is fantastic and by reading to your child in any language every night as part of their bedtime routine, you will lay the foundations for a successful school life.
Please see the Nursery page on the Mission Grove Website. There you can download leaflets that contain more tips and advice.
Snack Time
We set aside time each day for children to sit down together and enjoy a healthy snack of vegetables and/or fruit. Children will be given their own place mats and asked to help set the table with plates, jugs, cups and spoons. Giving time for children to sit down together and eat means that they have the opportunity to talk to their peers and reflect on what they have been doing that day. This supports child development in the three prime areas; Personal Social and Emotional Development, Communication & Language and Physical Development. Water and milk are also made available for children at all times during free- flow.
