• Baker Tilly in Southampton has appointed a new director in its restructuring and recovery practice. David Smithson has over 25 years‘ experience in both corporate insolvency and advisory work in the South Coast SME market. He has extensive knowledge across a number of sectors including hotels and leisure, care homes, education and engineering. In his new role, Smithson will take appointments for company administrations, liquidations and other insolvency procedures as well as further developing Baker Tilly‘s advisory and recovery services to businesses across the region.


• South Coast law firm Coffin Mew has announced six major promotions, adding two more partners and four more associate solicitors to its growing team. Jonathan Sleep (top left) of the wills, trusts and probate team and Douglas Miller (top right) of the clinical negligence team have been promoted to the role of partner. Annabelle Vaughan (bottom left) of the court of protection team, Amy Kerr (top, second from left) of the commercial team, Charlotte Farrell (bottom right) of the employment team and Jamie Earley (top, second from right) of the corporate team have become associate solicitors. Commenting on the promotions, managing partner Miles Brown said: ”While the injection of fresh ideas and impetus from new recruitment is important, so is the recognition of what our longer-serving people have brought, and continue to bring, to the firm.”


• Lambert Smith Hampton has promoted six key members of its South East team, following an outstanding year that has seen it win multiple awards, acquire ES Group and secure high-profile investment for the region. In the South Coast region, Andy Hodgkinson (above) has been promoted to director (office agency), Elise Evans to associate director (agency) and Ged Pocock to associate director (building consultancy). Hodgkinson commented: ”Following our acquisition by Countrywide, Lambert Smith Hampton is flourishing.”


• Spectrum Corporate Finance has appointed Iain Mckenzie as its director and head of technology, media & telecoms. Mckenzie, who has been on the Spectrum advisory board since its inception in 2012, will operate out of both the Southampton and Reading offices. Spectrum has made this appointment to establish the leading TMT advisory business in the region, with its increasingly important and active deal sector. Mckenzie joins the existing four-strong advisory directors to augment a total team of 10. He has a 30-year background in the technology sector having built and subsequently exited a number of technology companies, including Datapulse plc, Arc Solutions, Digital Techniques Inc and Mettoni. He is a qualified accountant (FCMA) and also holds an MBA from London Business School (Sloan Fellowship).


• Dorset commercial law firm Steele Raymond LLP has appointed new solicitor Jenny Cottrell to its property team. Cottrell has over 27 years‘ experience as a qualified solicitor and is well placed to provide personal legal support and advice to the firm‘s wide range of clients. Through her role at Steele Raymond, she will primarily specialise in residential development work and complex residential transactions. Cottrell also brings with her a wealth of experience as a corporate tax partner at a number of major law firms in London. More recently she worked in the corporate tax team at multinational professional services firm EY, before relocating to the South Coast earlier this year.


• One of the south‘s leading litigation lawyers has been appointed president of the Insurance Institute of Southampton. Kelvin Farmaner, who is a partner at Trethowans Solicitors, will take on the role of driving forward the Institute‘s ambitious programme and supporting its professional members for the next 12 months.


• Accountants James Cowper Kreston has strengthened its specialist VAT team with the appointment of VAT manager Nigel Waterfield. Waterfield joined the firm‘s existing VAT team on May 11 following a 30-year career at HMRC where he specialised in VAT. At James Cowper Kreston he will provide consultancy advice to clients, with a focus on disputes with HMRC, appeal procedures, alternative dispute resolution and complex negotiations with HMRC.

• National law firm Shoosmiths has appointed real estate partner John Downs to its growing real estate team. With over 12 years‘ experience in the law, Downs joins the Shoosmiths team from Field Fisher Waterhouse where he advised corporate clients on complex real estate projects, with a particular focus on the hotel and leisure sector. Based in Shoosmiths‘ Solent office, Downs will continue to advise clients on a wide range of commercial property work, including acquisitions and disposals of various types of commercial property from individual properties, to the acquisition or sale of property portfolios. He will also advise on the property elements of corporate transactions and will act for both landlords and tenants on a variety of landlord and tenant matters.
