Discover the beauty of Winnipeg’s top gardens

Sign onto a WSO Garden Magic tour of our top gardens Farther back, this year, she is revealing

F

ew things can bring more plea- sure on a day in June than the fresh beauty of a Manitoba gar-

den, and so for the sixth consecutive year the WSO’s Garden Magic and Mu- sic tours is inviting Winnipeggers and their friends to come and visit 15 of this city’s outstanding gardens. On Wednesday, June 24, join us starting at 5 p.m. for the WSO Garden Soirée. Travelling by bus, view three very special gardens while enjoying a delicious dinner and enchanting music by Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra mu- sicians. On Saturday, June 27, tour 12 stun-

ning gardens across city, several of them already popular favourites, with excit- ing new features – all specially chosen for you by Manitoba Gardener Living magazine. The tour period runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Take your car, and discover the beauty and creativity a Winnipeg garden can offer. Here are a few of the gardeners par- ticipating. Tim Evans had a showpiece garden

in Osborne village until a few years ago when he moved to a riverside home and soon had put together a still more im- pressive masterpiece. Tim says he began by inviting friends

and family to bring perennials of their choice to a house-warming party. The next day he planted the rabbit- and deer-proof plants in the front yard and the edible delicacies in back – and went on from there. “The front has since developed a

classic style, whereas the back is a very Asian influenced theme,” he reveals. Tim will be welcoming tour guests at the Garden Soirée and four days later at the day tour. Winnipeggers have been watching artist Ewa Tarsia’s magical garden cre- ation grow, and gradually take on new shapes – and with that new excitement. It’s a process and a project Ewa richly enjoys: for her the back yard is an exten- sion of the paintings she creates in her art studio inside, this year blooming in shades of red, blue and burgundy, ac- companied by a vertical vegetable gar- den and a strawberry tower.

her secret garden, a place of over 4,000 trees and shrubs, as well as perennials, growing behind her back fence (and that of her several neighbours), four years after cutting out a door to gain ac- cess to the land. Despite the harsh envi- ronment, everything is thriving. In front, husband Ludwik has had

his own impressive success: he has 60 rhododendrons growing. He started a good number of them 15 years ago, adding more from his travels over the years. Each one blooms every year, thanks to the tree-based micro-climate Ludwik has created there. The garden of John Tinkler and Jon

Thelps has justifiably also been judged one of Winnipeg’s top gardens, and this year it returns to the Garden Magic tours to offer its special pleasures to daytime viewers. This year John Tin- kler has brought new design interest to his 40-feet-long lap pool area, adding a long row of four-foot-tall, cone-shaped containers that draws the eyes with its striking, clean contemporary look. This unforgettable garden has many dimensions. The front yard is a true English garden. It leads to a formal courtyard featuring a reflective pond. A tall grass prairie walk takes you past a fenced-in kitchen and cutting garden and a greenhouse to a naturalized pond. When you enter an artist’s garden,

you are bound to be in for a few sur- prises. We are thrilled to present the vi- sion of Jordan Van Sewell and Joanne Vanderhorst in historic Point Douglas. Watch for the “Truffula” trees Jordan has created with his pruning shears. You may find some of his quirky art pieces living among the plants. June Buzahora’s garden was a tre- mendous hit on the Day Tour and then the Soirée, so we are again bringing it back, with a bit more of June’s special magic.

There are quite a few delightful sur-

prises in the lovely garden that June has tucked behind her venerable lilac trees. Like her neighbour Jordan, June is an artist and sometime her creations end up as part of the scenery. Now that she’s officially retired she hopes to have more

of her ideas on display in her garden. Look for the giant Miscanthus sinensis grasses she grows.

Now that the giant cottonwood has gone from the front yard, the garden of Dorothy and Glenn Dobbie has taken on new life. See how the peonies appre- ciate the extra room. Stroll through the rose garden, past the little Zen vignette to the sunny and floriferous back yard

with its dozens of containers and a pret- ty shade garden under the self-asserted Manitoba maple. Tickets to the Garden Soirée are $135

each, or $250 per couple and include access to the Day Tour. Passports to at- tend only the Day Tour are $35 each. To buy your tickets or learn more, con- tact the WSO box office at 204-949- 3999 or visit wso.ca.
