Leanne hopes to raise awareness
A24-YEAR old teacher from Snod- land is hoping to raise awareness of disability during her bid to be- come Miss Kent. Leanne Burgess went to Maid-
stone Grammar School for Girls be- fore doing her teacher training at Canterbury Christ Church Univer- sity.
Shenowworks with children and
young people who have learning difficulties, which has heightened herawareness of the prejudice some people face on a daily basis. She also has a twin brother who
has cerebral palsy. Leanne said: “There are a number
of reasons that I chose to enter Miss Kent. These include boosting my own self-confidence and being a positive role model to other young people. Iwanted to show them that, as well as taking pride in your ap- pearance, you can be a successful young professional. I want to use this opportunity to inspire others.” Leanne has launched her own campaign “Changing Impressions”, which she hopes to highlight as part of her path to potentially becoming the next Miss Kent. Leanne chiefly promotes her cam-
paign through the Changing Im- pressions page on Facebook. She said: “Having grown up with
a severely disabled twin brother and worked with children and young people with learning difficulties, I have found the prejudice that they have faced as a result of other peo- ple's misconceptions of their dis- ability unacceptable. “ I founded the campaign to pro-
mote awareness of the challenges that individuals can face, by asking people to share positive experiences and insights into these circum- stances. I hope to help to promote tolerance and respect within our so- ciety.” The final of Miss Kent at the Spa
Hotel, Royal Tunbridge Wells, on Sunday June 21, is a qualifying round for the Miss England Beauty Pageant.
