Road safety

request TOVIL Parish Council is to write to Taylor Wimpey asking for help in improving pedestrian safety on the new approach road to Hayle Park. It was said that as more traffic

now used the junction with Gle- neagles Drive, pedestrians were forced to take “a leap of faith” when crossing the road. Councillors agreed to write to the

developer asking for a pedestrian pinch point at the entrance to the new estate road to slow traffic and provide a place from which pedes- trians could be seen and look to cross in safety. The council will also ask Taylor

Wimpey, Maidstone Council and Kent County Council to call ameet- ing over the management of Hayle Park Nature Reserve. Councillors expressed concern

about the proposed pond and the safety of children and agreed, as an interim measure, to get cost quota- tions to fence off the area.

Fete deferred

THERE will be no Tovil Parish Council fete this year – but it is hoped an even better one can be staged next year. Councillors felt that that there

was insufficient time to organise the event this summer and discus- sions were still taking place con- cerning the venue for next year. Councillors felt that itwas crucial

that more residents got involved in the organisation of the event. Any- one interested in helping should call the parish clerk Alison Chew on 01622 675628 or email at tovil- parishcouncil@btopenworld.com

Grateful Scout COUNCILLORS received a letter of thanks from a member of Tovil Scouts for the donation of £175 to- wards his £3,000 trip to the World Jamboree in Japan. The Scout also offered to give the council a presentation on his return about his trip.

New councillors elected

THE recent elections led to a new line-up on Tovil Parish Council and a change in leadership. The outgoing chairman, Cllr

Glyn Charlton, had informed the council that he would not be stand- ing as chairman again this year after many years of service to the council and to Tovil. David Fleck, Michael Hogg, Alan

Smith, who had previously served for six years on the council, and Paul Wilby were welcomed to the annual meeting. A vote by the full council saw

Cllr Nike Azeez step into the role of chairman with Cllr Paul Wilby as vice-chairman. Michael Hogg immediately re-

signed from the council and left the meeting.

No defibrillator THE possible purchase, location and operation of a community de- fibrillator was discussed, raising a number of concerns. Finding a suitable location for the equipment, the cost, the potential for the equipment to be vandalised and the training needed to operate the equipment were among the is- sues raised. In conclusion, councillors felt ill- prepared to provide and maintain such an important piece of equip- ment, particularly when trained paramedicswere able to service the area quickly from Maidstone.

Cllrs Nike Azeez, David Fleck, Paul Wilby and Alan Smith

As only nine candidates stood for election on May 7 there are already two vacancies for parish council- lors which will be filled by co-op- tion on June 1. Anyone wishing to be considered

for the vacant posts is urged to apply by email to tovilparishcoun-

Tidy project

COUNCILLORS will investigate what maintenance work is needed to keep the area outside the Allnutt Mill development tidy, after the dis- banding of the Tovil Residents’ As- sociation. Members felt they could then de-

termine who should carry out the work. Councillors agreed to work to-

gether to fill the community planters with flowers at the end of May, with several councillors offer- ing their services to source, collect and plant the flowers.

Social media under discussion COUNCILLORS are to investigate the possibility of setting up a Face- book site for the parish council. The new vice-chairman agreed to look online for other parish coun-

cil sites that make use of the communication facility, following con- cern about how it would be used and what would be posted. It was felt that the parish council needed to consider reaching a

wider part of the community, including trying to engage more young people, many of whom remain unaware of what the council is in- volved in and what it is doing for the community.

cil@btopenworld.com. Candidates need to live or work

in Tovil or within three miles as the crow flies of the boundary of Tovil. The vacancies are also published on Tovil Parish Council’s website at www.tovilpc.kentparishes.gov.uk and on the parish noticeboards.

Safety fears

PARISH councillors and county Cllr Brian Clark are to write to the developer of the site at the top of Farleigh Hill/Dean Street after a member of the public reported sight line problems when leaving a lane on to Dean Street. This is because residents park

their vehicles at right angles to the road on the verge and block the view of traffic from the left. It was noted that a layby had

been provided for the residents of the nearby cottages to use for park- ing but that it was rarely used. A solution had been promised to re- solve this issue once building work is complete and Cllr Clark commit- ted to write to the developer to see if this can be brought forward.

Pub protection COUNCILLORS have agreed to make approaches to have Tovil’s only remaining hostelry, the Royal Paper Mill pub, made a community asset. Members heard that this would provide some protection for the premises as a working pub.
