Arts to help explore practice of medicine
FOLLOWING on from the Anatomy Season in Cardiff, 2013, Clod Ensemble’s Per- forming Medicine Season 2015 is a series of workshops and talks that provide an opportu- nity to examine our expecta- tions of the healthcare profes- sion, to share responsibility for its evolution, and to enrich the ways in which we think about and experience our own bodies. No previous arts or performance experience is required, and events are open to those interested in health, medical education, and arts. Inside information: The Heart, May 21, 7pm-9pm. Led by Professor Judith Hall,
Dr Cristina Diaz Navarro, Dr Balachandran and Emma Lewis. In collaboration with School of Medicine, College of Biomedical and Life Sci- ences, Cardiff University and Wales Millennium Centre. In this workshop you will
get the chance to get to grips with the anatomy of the heart through different media. You will experience an anatomical demonstration of the cadav- eric human heart, and a heart simulation exercise. The workshop will also feature a different look at the work- ings of the heart, through the artistic and physiological perspective of a dancer. This
event will be illustrated by students from Cardiff School of Art and Design. Medical Education and the Arts, May 26, 7pm-9pm. In collaboration with School
of Medicine, College of Bio- medical and Life Sciences, Cardiff University and Wales Millennium Centre. Arts-based learning is be- coming increasingly popular in medical and health educa- tion. Teaching methods of- ten found in the visual and performing arts are being employed to help students de- velop skills central to clinical practice such as verbal and non-verbal communication, critical thinking, observa- tion and coordination, stress management and building resilience. In this forum Suzy Willson,
Artistic Director of Clod En- semble’s Performing Medi- cine project will talk about her experience of collaborat- ing with clinicians and edu- cationalists, medical schools and NHS Trusts, across the UKfor more than 10 years and describe some of the benefits and challenges of interdisci- plinary projects of this kind. This will be followed by a pan- el discussion – speakers to be confirmed.
