Barnes, Andy Robinson and Dan Evans. Angela is a BBC New Com-
edy Award-winning English comedian and a self-confessed massive BBC Radio 4 nerd – particularly The News Quiz of which Linda Smith is her comedy hero. Andy Robinson has been performing comedy for five years and says he will con- tinue to do so until he marries into royalty. His foray into stand-up com-
edy began in the early 90s when he played guitar in a
band, often leaving the audi- ence in hysterics as his patter between songs gradually be- came longer and more enter- taining than the music. Finally, Dan Evans’ acces-
sible but childish surreal- ism has delighted audiences throughout the UK and Ire- land. He’s also had his grammar
corrected by Dutch and Ger- man crowds; performed for ex-pats in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Singapore and Thailand, and is one of just two UK comics to play Hanoi, Vietnam. All of the acts are provided
by Off The Kerb. To find out more or to

Pirates hit shores at The Riverfront
“GILBERT and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance works phenomenally well in a cinema environment,” says film director Mike Leigh. “The directness of the hu- mour, the clarity of the score, the simplicity of the story – they’re all great for cinema. It’s short, and to-the-point, and funny. And it’s in Eng- lish. I say – go see it.” At the risk of disappoint-
ing any Gilbert and Sullivan cinephiles, Leigh (whose fil- mography includes Abigail’s Party, Topsy Turvy, Vera Drake and Mr. Turner) isn’t talking about a new feature film of the classic operetta. He’s discussing the live HD broadcast of his new pro- duction at English National Opera, which can be seen at The Riverfront, Newport, on Tuesday, May 19. It is the most eagerly-await-
ed live opera screenings of the year. Leigh wrote and directed the 1999 BAFTAwinning film

Topsy Turvy, starring Jim Broadbent as Gilbert and Al- lan Corduner as Sullivan, which explored the duo’s fractious relationship during the creation of The Mikado. He’s also the president of both the Sir Arthur Sullivan Society and the W.S. Gilbert Society. But for all his love of the subject, this is the first time Leigh has ever staged an op- era. And it is also the first time since 1970 (with two small exceptions) that he has directed anything other than work he has devised himself. So the stakes are pretty high. Find out for yourself if he’s
done the job. Tickets for the live cinema broadcast of The Pirates of Penzance on Tues- day, May 19, at 7.30pm, and further information can be found at

to get hold of a ticket? Follow the highs and lows
of their outrageous misfor- tunes as they cheer our boys on.
