Oxford companies in the medium- sized quoted section took the spotlight in the March table of share price movements, with Biomedica gaining an amazing 54% after announcing good preliminary results for last year.
The biopharmaceutical company, which specialises in the development and commercialisation of innovative gene-based medicines, said licensing revenues increased five-fold to £5.1 million, including £4.8m upfront payments from Novartis with which it signed a new licensing and manufacturing contract worth up to $90m over the next three years. Manufacturing revenue trebled to £7.7m and £0.8m came from an R&D collaboration with Sanofi.
Oxford Instruments also had a good month with an 11% rise after announcing the introduction of a
new regulatory compliance device. It said manufacturers, importers and retailers of consumer goods and components are set to benefit from a lightweight, hand-held X-ray fluorescence analyser for the screening of raw materials, components and finished goods.
Among the smaller companies to clock up a large share price rise was Sopheon, the Surrey-based provider of software and services that help organisations generate more revenues and profits from new products. It announced its results for 2014 showing that although revenues were slightly down on the previous year at $18.3m, a total of 42 new and extension licence orders were secured and the recurring revenue base coming into 2015 was up at $7.9m.

Summer launch for the Southern Manufacturing 100
The Southern Manufacturing 100 will be launched by The Business Magazine in the coming months.
The campaign is supported by NatWest, law firm Shoosmiths, accountancy firm MacIntyre Hudson, and IT company Taylor Made Computer Solutions.
A list of the top private manufacturing companies in the south will be published in an upcoming issue of The Business Magazine, and the index will be available online.
Events will be held including Roundtable debates in both Reading and Southampton bringing together top manufacturing companies from across the region.
Publisher David Murray said: “Following the success of our other lists, such as the Southern Tech 100 and the Thames Valley 250, we want to shine the spotlight on manufacturing in this region.

“While we may not have the big car factories in the south – notwithstanding MINI at Oxford – we have a wealth of top quality manufacturers, especially smaller scale, high-end engineering companies.
“In the Thames Valley there are numerous specialist businesses, including the cluster around Formula One motor racing, while in the Solent region, apart from traditional manufacturers, the marine sector has some excellent success stories.
“Through this campaign, we will be profiling growing manufacturers and highlighting some of the challenges facing the sector.”
Manufacturing contributes £6.7 trillion to the global economy and makes up 54% of UK exports. The sector employs 2.6 million people.
• Manufacturing companies based in the Thames Valley or Solent regions that would like to be included in the 100 should email details to David Murray at

• The 100 will be based on turnover. Sources used will be FAME and Experian which collate data from Companies House records.
• Only UK headquartered and owned businesses will be included. Foreign companies and listed businesses will be excluded.
• According to the CBI, the South East is the biggest manufacturing region in the country.
• More details of the Southern Manufacturing 100 will appear in the June issue.
