Cantering to success in the Queen's Awards
Just a week or so after a Berkshire- based horse grabbed the national sporting headlines by winning the Grand National, a Surrey company that has revolutionised the diagnosis of equine lameness became one of only two double-winners in the 2015 Queen’s Awards.
Guildford-based Hallmarq Veterinary Imaging was honoured in both the Innovation and International Trade sections of the scheme, regarded as the most prestigious business awards in the country.
Hallmarq received the Innovation award for designing a magnetic resonance imaging scanner for examining the lower limbs of horses. The new equipment enables procedures that eliminate health risks associated with anaesthetised horses lying down, as required previously.
The company, which has 24 employees under chief executive officer Jos Belgrave, began trading in 2000. It is currently in the process of rolling out its latest PetVet product after a three-year R&D programme, representing a $1 million investment. Growth in overseas earnings rose 105% over the past six years.
International trade
Another 11 companies from the Thames Valley were honoured for International Trade, including Cobalt Light Systems at Milton Park. Established in 2008, it develops and manufactures laboratory instruments and spectroscopy systems used predominantly for airport security and pharmaceutical quality control.
The company, with a staff of 32, saw growth in overseas sales of 1,675% over the past three years.
Curo Consulting, founded in 2002 at Marlow, designs, develops and deploys tablet-based sales tools for the pharmaceutical sector. It targeted likely clients with a proactive system that secured growth in export earnings of 684% in the past three years. With a small staff of 12, Curo is exhibiting, sponsoring and attending medical conferences worldwide.
Isis Innovation is one of three Oxford companies in the latest Queen’s Awards list. Trading as Isis Enterprise it provides technology commercialisation and innovation management consultancy services around the world.
Isis Innovation was established in 2004 as the technology commercialisation company of the University of Oxford. Its 15 employees have recruited international associate consultants to expand globally.
LambdaTek, a family-run Oxford business established in 2005, resells computer equipment and has recently extended the UK business into Europe. Its website resells over 150,000 products and covers most consumer electronics and IT equipment.
A staff of 17 has upgraded back office systems to manage multiple currencies and languages, working towards export earnings of 680% in the past three years.
Zinc Ahead was established in 2001 and is now the world’s leading provider of software solutions that enable life science companies to comply with the requirements of regulatory bodies governing the promotion of pharmaceutical and other healthcare products.
The Oxford company’s staff of 73 saw growth in its export earnings of 109% in the past three years.
A Guildford company that began trading only in 2011 to provide digital technology agency services has gained a Queen’s Award for International Trade. Mediastation Creative Solutions offers strategy, creativity and cutting edge production of Computer Graphic Imagery.
The company, with 33 employees, trades as Smart Cookie which has clocked up outstanding overseas sales growth after implementing a strategy focused around collaboration and project work.
Original BTC was among three other Oxfordshire companies honoured in this section. The company began trading at Witney in 1998 to design and manufacture lighting fittings, recording export earnings of 98% in the past three years. In 2013 most export sales were to France and the USA, but now with 45 staff it is extending its territories to regions such as China.
Founded in 1998 and located near Abingdon, Oxford PharmaGenesis provides marketing and writing services to pharmaceutical companies.

It exhibits and presents its own original research at society congresses around the world, and encourages its 100 employees to publish their own work in international academic journals.
Established in 2010, Zigzag Associates at Milton Park provides quality assurance services to the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry.
The company initially started working within the UK only, but with a small staff of 11 – and an expanding network of consultants – it now undertakes audit activities in 70 countries.
RWS Group, established in 1982 at Chalfont St Peter, provides translations and intellectual property and language support services through four specialist divisions. Its growth to over 300 staff has been fuelled by the increase in filings of global patent applications.
Ultrasonic Sciences at Aldershot, founded in 1989, is the only UK company manufacturing complete ultrasonic testing systems. These are used in a wide range of manufacturing and construction sectors.
With a small staff of 23, several new markets have been established over the past three years.
Sustainable development
Benchmark Woodworking of Kintbury has been awarded its second Sustainable Development Award. The furniture maker, which employs over 60 staff, has a long- established focus on craftsmanship, design and sustainability and an exemplary approach to transparency and accountability.
In conjunction with Imperial College London and PE Associates in Stuttgart it developed the world’s first wooden furniture with full Life Cycle Assessment results.
Innovation
A Queen’s Award for Innovation went to Accesso Technology Group of Twyford, whose 66 staff work on the continuous development of a digital system which enhances visitor experiences at theme parks and similar venues.
The new product extends the company’s pioneering virtual queuing system that has aided park visitors, and benefits theme parks through increased spend per visitor.
