Music group breathes newlife into classics

ACCLAIMED: Colin Currie Group

THE acclaimed Colin Currie Group will perform an excit- ing, experimental programme of Steve Reich at St David’s Hall to kick-start your Bank Holiday weekend. Now approaching his 80th

birthday, the composer’s in- credible body of work contin- ues to be lauded. Yet, the Colin Currie Group still breathes new life into it, and will cel- ebrate his legacy on May 1. Along with Philip Glass,

Terry Riley and La Monte Young, Steve Reich pioneered Minimal music in the 60s. His ground-breaking approach de- rived from a combined love of jazz, Bach and Stravinsky and imbued with the intoxicating rhythms of African music. Therefore, contemporary mu-

CONCERT: Belle & Sebastian

GLASWEGIAN indie heroes Belle and Sebastian will take St David’s Hall by storm this Sunday. The critically-acclaimed outfit recently released their ninth studio album entitled Girls in Peacetime Want to Dance, which features the band’s trademark wistful pop

template. It also blends elec- tro with baroque balladry and Euro-pop hooks. Yet, still their sound is unmistakable. Since forming in 1996, Belle

and Sebastian have gained a loyal cult following. And as typical underdogs, they beat better-known acts such as Steps and Five to the Best

Newcomer accolade at the 1999 BRIT Awards despite be- ing signed to a tiny independ- ent label. Chart success has also been secured with four Top 10 albums including the clas- sic The Life Pursuit, plus a further trio of Top 20 sin- gles; namely Legal Man, I’m

A Cuckoo and Funny Little Frog. They even sold out the Hollywood Bowl. Always unique and unpre- dictable, it’s not hard to see why they are adored by their legion of fans. Limited tickets available at

£25. See stdavidshallcardiff. co.uk or call 029 2087 8444.

Classic band are still just as popular

sic fans and newcomers to the fascinating world of Minimal- ism are in for a treat when the Colin Currie Group impecca- bly interprets some of Reich’s finest pieces. The ground-breaking Clap-

ping Music starts the show, which was Reich’s idea to “create a piece of music that needed no instruments be- yond the human body.” Fea- turing performers clapping with no other accompani- ment, the rhythms created are simple but utterly com- pelling.

Clapping Music then gives

way to the hypnotic puls- ing of the Sextet and Mallet Quartet pieces, which bathe the listener in captivating waves of sound. Closing the show in style is Quartet, which features the spectacu- larly sonorous mix of pianos and vibraphones. As both a soloist and cham-

ber artist, Currie performs regularly with the world’s leading orchestras and con- ductors. Tickets are £16.50 (plus

a £2.95 service charge). To book visit stdavidshallcar- diff.co.uk or call the Box Of- fice on 029 20878444
