The Illinois River Road is one of 150 elite roadways across the U.S. designated for their archeological, cultural, historic, natural, recreational and scenic qualities. The National Scenic Byway Program is a grassroots effort established by the USDOT Federal Highway Administration to help recognize, preserve and enhance selected roads throughout the United States in order to “Create a distinctive collection of American roads, their stories and treasured places.”
