The Woods Hole Oceanographic Insti- tution (WHOI) announces that the Human Occupied Vehicle (HOV) Alvin has achieved certifi cation from the U. S. Naval Sea Sys- tems Command (NAVSEA) for operations to its rated depth of 4,500 meters (approx. 2.8 miles). Two certifi cation dives were con- ducted in the waters off Arica, Chile, on Jan- uary 26-27 from the research vessel Atlantis, to demonstrate vehicle performance. Navy representatives were on hand to monitor the process and participate in the dives. Certifi cation of Alvin to 4,500 meters represents the successful culmination of the $41-million, multi-year upgrade of the submersible funded by the National Science Foundation with a signifi cant cost share by WHOI. In January 2014, NAVSEA certifi ed Alvin to a depth of 3,800 meters, clearing the vehicle to return to service. In March 2014 a group of scientists put Alvin through its paces in the Gulf of Mexico, test-driving the upgraded vehicle and its new sampling, imaging, surveying and navigation systems. Alvin has subsequently made 99 dives during missions to the Gulf of Mexico, Juan de Fuca Ridge, and East Pacifi c Rise.

offered by a State Maritime Academy. The subject matter covers origin and supply of oil, and all aspects of highly technical off- shore drilling industries. “We will develop the program accord- ing to the needs for training and certifi cation that offshore industries require,” said Mike Young. “We are looking to build on what students are learning in the introductory course; add new courses, such as dynamic positioning and rig safety management; and broaden training and hands-on education opportunities as well.” Young’s career has qualifi ed him to

lead the charge on this new development for the college. Most recently, he worked for Seadrill as a Rig Manager for several dif- ferent deep-water units, and at Transocean

Research Submersible ALVIN Completes Certifi cation

Alvin was positioned in early 2015 off Chile, where depths of 4,500 meters were readily available to complete the certifi cation trials to its full design depth. “Alvin’s performance on the certifi - cation dives was near fl awless and readily met our requirements for certifi cation,” said NAVSEA System Certifi cation Authority Representative Greg Sorrells, who partic- ipated in the fi nal certifi cation dive, along with Pilot Bob Waters and Pilot-in-Training Jefferson Grau. “In addition, I thoroughly enjoyed the dive and working with the WHOI team.” Alvin is operated as part of the Nation- al Deep Submergence Facility (NDSF), which is managed by WHOI on behalf of a consortium of universities and research organizations that conduct deep ocean re- search known as the University National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UN- OLS). Alvin is owned by the US Navy and its sponsoring agency is the Offi ce of Naval Research (ONR).

Offshore as a Lead Mechanical Engineer assigned to the Discoverer Clear Leader project. Young is returning to the Academy as a member of the faculty for the third time; he has held posts as Associate Professor in the Department of Engineering for more than 12 years over two separate timespans. During one of those, he was the Chief En- gineer on the Training Ship State of Maine. He will teach the offshore technology course he established, and assist in fundraising for the new programs in development. “Approximately 50% of our graduates

go into offshore industries when they grad- uate from Maine Maritime Academy,” said Tim Leach, Director of Career Services. “These industries are highly specialized, so our graduates need the unique education and skills necessary to compete in the job market.”

The new offshore program will serve both degree-seeking and continuing educa- tion students.
