In close order follow the American fl ag, fi gures, dates and mottoes. Often a man’s one time sweetheart, all encircled by a heart which drips blood, are used. Conventional designs the word “mother”, coats of arms, anchors, female figures, ships, clasped hands, daggers, crosses, bracelet, and tombstone are also popular. “Superstition enters largely into the selection of the design. For example, a tombstone is supposed to protect a man’s loved ones at home and the fi gure of a pig on the foot is supposed to shield the possessor from death. Neptune and a bevy of mermaids is supposed to keep a man from drowning. A foaming glass of beer insures happiness.” * * * * *
