Maine Yacht Center in Portland has kept busy this winter with preparing an Open 60 for the 2016 Vendee Globe race. This boat underwent major repairs last winter, but while sitting at her mooring in Marblehead last summer she was struck by lightning. Due to the lightning strike they had to do a full electrical refi t. Fortunately the hull was undamaged, which was inspected by a spe- cialized surveyor. They also did some other minor work on getting this racer ready for a trans-Atlantic crossing and the upcoming start a year and a half away.

Wilbur Yachts is doing a total rehab on this South Shore 38 for the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries.

SEAL COVE AU TO MUSE UM

Celebrating the cultural and industrial innovations of the earliest automobiles.

Open daily 10am-5pm, May 1-Oct 31

Also being worked on are two Class 40s, which will be racing in the New York Yacht Club’s trans-Atlantic race scheduled for June. Eight of these boats are entered. One of the boats they worked on had exten- sive modifi cations made to her cockpit. They added more shelter for the skipper so that the boat would be a little drier when driving. They also added some electronics. The other racer had her ballast tanks modifi ed so as to increase her downwind performance. A Morris 36 is in for a refi t before she competes in the Bermuda 1-2 this June. They will be painting the deck, modifying her deck hardware and adding electronics. They also have a large collection of storage customers and they have been work- ing on getting them ready for the upcoming season. They still have more work to do that will take them right into the early part of the summer.

have painted a Monhegan 30, a Hinckley 43 and two Sabre 48s.

Lowell Brothers in Yar mouth is busy doing a Lowell Brothers 43 hull for a fi sh- erman from Massachusetts.

They also have a Lowell 43 being laid up by Chris Johnson in Brunswick, which will be going to Farrin’s Boat Shop to be fi nished off.

Once they are done with their 43 they will be doing some minor repair work on a Lowell 22.

At C & C Machine in Ellsworth they have two boats inside getting work done. For most of the winter Cameron Craw- ford has had his new boat in the shop, which is the former DANI-RACH of Bass Harbor. He purchased her the end of last season and is doing some modifi cations before setting her off for this coming fi shing season. He has added a winter back, trap rack, rope locker, clean-out hatch, some minor engine work on her 355-hp Cummins diesel and re-wiring. The other boat in the shop is a Duffy 35

named KNOT EXACTLY. She is getting a new house, some other small repairs, install new recessed deck cleats made by C&C Machine, and repair the rudder.

Both will be ready for the water mid- spring.

Wilbur Yacht in Manset is hard at work on a South Shore 38, which is a patrol boat for the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries. She arrived the third week of Jan- uary and they immediately began addressing areas with wet core, which was mostly in the house. Other work has included: changing the engine mounts from hard to soft; replace the rudder and propeller; and re-bonded. They still have a lot of work to go, includ- ing: paint the house; buff hull; add a new electronic package with console; redo the hydraulic system, maybe add a trolling valve on gear; build a new mast; add removable trap rack; add more seating in house; rewire; new windows, one with a clear-view screen; new windshield wipers; and the normal an- nual maintenance items.

Gloucester, MA, they have been busy, de- spite their constant battle with ice. This is the fi rst time in seventeen years that they have been iced in so that they cannot use the railways. In mid-March they fi nally were able to get the north track working, but the south track would only go up and not down. The problem is there is a barge on the south track that is ready to launch, but they are patiently waiting for Mother Nature to free up the track. They did some repair work on the hull, including the bottom and deck, on the barge and then painted.

Sitting at the dock and waiting to get hauled up on the south railway is the large steel passenger boat THOMAS LAUGH- TON. She is the ferry that runs between Portsmouth, NH and Isle of Shoals and is owned by the Isles of Shoals Steamship Co. The travelift has been working all

winter. Recently they hauled up the steel fi shing vessel DONNA MARIE. She had an electronic piece added to her hull and has already been launched.
