News Oil thefts leave worshippers cold

THIEVES who returned to the church in East Farleigh three times to steal the oil for its heating system have forced the congregation to worship in the cold. The fuel tank at St Mary’s Church

in Lower Road has been emptied three times in as many weeks and now parishioners agree no more oil will be ordered until a solution can be found to secure the system. Rev Peter Callway said: “It is so

sad that the impact of this should fall on such a small and dedicated con- gregation, many of whom are eld- erly. “It will not stop us worshipping

andwe are praying for the perpetra- tors, but it is making life cold and uncomfortable.” A group including the church

warden is now making inquiries to find an engineered solution to pro- tect the tank.

The oil was first stolen on about January 30, when the fuel pipe was cut and the tank drained. Two other thefts took place on separate days in February. On each occasion, the congrega-

tionwas forced to dig deep to repair the tank and replace the oil, which could not be insured. Anyone with information is asked

to call 101, quoting the crime refer- ence number YY/003039/15.

Caravan plan RETROSPECTIVE planning per-

mission was granted for the station- ing of an additional mobile home for gypsy use in Church Hill, Boughton Monchelsea.

In February 2010, consent was granted for one mobile home and one touring caravan at Fairway but an additional mobile home has been in place, contrary to the plan- ning permission, since February 2011.

Although Maidstone Council of- ficers conceded that the additional mobile home was causing “some in- creased visual impact”, the plan- ning committee agreed that this would not be significant enough to cause unacceptable harm. Permis- sion was granted unanimously.
