eventspotlights Talk Green to Me

(APL) this April for “Talk Green to Me,” a free

J

series of fun and informative discussions, presentations and documentaries at library branches across town. For the whole month, the library will host programs that explore topics such as gray water recycling, urban wildlife habitats, green landscaping, community gardens, growing local, sustainable community planning, small-footprint living, eco homes, the Barton Springs aquifer and even edible insects. The entire list of events can be found on the library’s

website, Library.AustinTexas.gov/talkgreen. From 6 to 8 p.m, April 22, the Carver Branch will host a family-friendly Earth Day celebration featuring local groups such as Keep Austin Beautiful, an organization providing resources and education to engage citizens in building more beautiful communities, and Little Herds, an Austin-based nonprofit working with governments, entrepreneurs and businesses to help create a market for bug-eaters. Local musician, artist and carpenter Thor Harris will also present his tips on green living, and the Austin Science and Nature Center will be on hand to discuss the work they do in the community, with a focus on recon- necting people with nature and the mental and physical benefits of being outdoors. APL reports that the average library book is checked out 57 times, thus making public libraries the premier green alternative. APL encourages people to walk, bike or ride pub- lic transportation to the nearest branch and check out some books about energy and water conservation, urban farming, slow foods and more. One can also browse the Virtual Li- brary at Library.AustinTexas.gov/virtual. By borrowing instead of buying, one can conserve space in the home and keep waste out of the landfill.

Susanna Bair Gets to the Heart of the Matter

S

usanna Bair, published author and recognized mystic of the heart, presents The Heart that Heals: A Workshop on Emotional Intelligence, at 9 a.m., March 28 at St. David’s Episcopal Church. Bair will share methods and practices for heart-centered healing.

The one-day workshop will

teach participants basic and advanced meditation using breath, visualization and vocalized sound to energize and heal the heart. Bair will dem- onstrate energetic methods for resolving four common emotional problems: how to heal a heart of disappoint- ment; how to heal a heart of burnout after a long period of success and accomplishment; how to heal a heart of isolation and loneliness by finding the purpose of one’s life; and how to forgive and be forgiven so one’s heart can grow and feel uplifted. Workshop participants will also learn long-secret hidden codes within the 11-ring labyrinth and how these codes reveal that the four common emotional challenges are part of every spiritual path. Bair will show how the labyrinth represents the developmental path of life, including the powers and difficulties at each step and why some people can get stuck on a certain step along the path. Bair has 25 years of experience teaching heart- focused healing and meditation practices. Her books include Living from the Heart, Energize Your Heart and Follow Your Heart. This workshop is intended for those who are interested in learning a heart-centered healing modality, and those in need of healing for themselves or their families.

Location: 301 East 8th St., Austin. For more information, visit IAmHeart.org/Austin. See ad, page 3.
