Dare to Go Zero Waste I
n keeping with its effort
to transform waste into resources while keeping the community clean, Austin Resource Re- covery (ARR), provider of resi- dential curb- side collection of trash, recycling and yard trimmings, introduces Zero Waste by 2040. The goal is to reduce the amount of trash sent to landfills by 90 percent by the year 2040.
ARR estimates that Austin residents
are currently diverting about 40 per- cent of their waste away from landfills. While that’s better than some neighbor- ing cities and states, ARR notes it also means that 60 percent of waste is still ending up in landfills, and many of the items being thrown away can be recycled or reused into new products. Zero Waste is a philosophy that
goes beyond recycling to focus first on reducing trash and reusing products and then recycling and composting the rest. Zero Waste recognizes that one person’s trash is another person’s treasure, and everything is a resource for something or someone else. ARR is encouraging the Austin community to recycle more and take the Austin Recycles pledge (
Bit.ly/atxpledge). People can also help spread the word through photos of themselves taking the pledge. Photos can be emailed to
